Zappos Selling Lappos: Shoe Retailer Takes on Notebooks

August 5th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

I will admit Zappos doesn’t carry my style shoes, but my type of laptop is a different story. Spotted by a few shoe lovers this morning is Zappos’ inventory of mobile technology products. I guess Zappos’ was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But Zappos isn’t just any other e-tailer. You might get a sweet deal on a new pair of Crocs but not on a HP Mini-Note or a ASUS Eee PC 900. The site is marking up the prices on some of the notebooks. For instance as Kevin Tofel points out the HP Mini-NoteĀ  sells direct for $599. Zappos has upped the price to $603.

Similarly they are selling the Eee PC 900 for $554. Newegg and TigerDirect have got it for $449. Even Amazon.com is offering the 900 with a $100 rebate right now.

I am interested in the “free shipping both ways!” Seems like Zappos forgot to remove the standard shoe tagline from the electronics section. On the other hand, if the laptop doesn’t fit I guess you can return it, free of a shipping charge.
