Yankee Group Survery: More People Want a BlackBerry Than an iPhone
April 23rd, 2009 by Todd Haselton
Despite all of the hype around the third coming of the iPhone in June and the impending release of the Palm Pre, Yankee Group has just released numbers showing that more people are interested in buying a BlackBerry than an iPhone. And the lack of interest in Android is even more surprising. According to Yankee Group senior analyst Josh Martin, a survey showed that 44 percent of those interested in buying a smart phone wanted a BlackBerry device, while just 30 percent were interested in buying an iPhone. “This survey was fielded after iPhone 3.0 was announced as well meaning that that release may not tip the scales in Apple’s favor,” Martin said in his Yankee Group blog post “Does everyone want a smartphone?” The analyst firm attributes the interest in RIM to the variety of devices across carriers and at various price points. Many of RIM’s devices can be had for below the $199 starting price of the iPhone. There’s also a total lack of interest in Android. The survey showed that less than 4 percent of consumers were interested in buying an Android device. Despite the ailing economy, 41 percent of the respondents were interested in buying a new handset with a data plan. This theme appears to have held through different economic brackets, too; 30 percent of the respondents that made under $10,000 per year were also ready to buy a smartphone. We can’t put too much stock in that last number though, because if you’re making under $10,000 a year and can afford a smart phone, you probably have family members who are earning more.

I’d like to see the details on this poll because att’s numbers say otherwise.
Maybe people that don’t want att want blackberrys and I could see that as being plausible but that may just be a lack of verity of phones other carriers have.

I don’t want either one of them…. I see too much “slaves” and “junkies” and I can’t stand them already: an army of senseless robots marching and keeping their eyes fixed on their pathetic gadget.

Leaving out the non-USA products: Nokia (world’s biggest seller of cameras), LG, Samsung, HTC? Or are you afraid of Microsoft Windows & freeware Symbian operating systems? Europe goes Nokia. East Asia goes onto its own hardware, with USA-Micosoft CE. Pity Yankees don’t care about the rest of this planet. I’m waiting for the next Korean smartphone, touch-screen keys, 8 megapixel (video) camera, GPS, wlan, & A-GPS, Bluetooth-2, Windows CE 6.5.
Blackberry & Apple have vastly inferior products, compared to what is happening outside of the USA.

Greg – I’d like to point out that RIM is not American, but Canadian. North American is different than American.
I think the iPhone and the Blackberry aren’t exactly congruent in terms of function. BB is more professional-based, which may be why it’s more popular in that regard. iPhone is more toy-like in terms of its features. I think the younger one is, the more likely to want an iPhone over a Blackberry, and based on demographics alone that would leave the BB more popular. Also, BBs have more models and came out first.
