If early predictions are any indication, the iPad 2 is already a BlockBuster, with analyst estimates ranging from 500,000 to one million units sold over the weekend. Translation: Good luck trying to find an iPad 2.
Lucky for you, we here at LAPTOP did our home work and we’re happy to report that not all hope is lost if you want to get your mitts on an iPad 2.
As one of the World’s largest retail chains, surely they can manage to round up a few 2nd gen iPads right? A quick call to a Brooklyn based Target yielded some results. According to the sales rep, they do indeed have a new shipment of Ipad 2’s in stock, but he wouldn’t say which models and made the point that customers would need to explicitly ask for an iPad 2 as they will not be displaying them out on the floor.
Best Buy is taking a different approach. Customers who go to a retail store (no web surfing here), can pre-order one which comes in the form of a $100 gift card placed toward the model of your choice once it arrives. When your order comes in, Best Buy will notify you, at which time you will need to bring in your receipt and give card and pay the remainder of the balance for your chosen model. This service will be available at all Best Buys and if you act now, you will most likely receive your device much sooner than the 3-4 week wait time currently advertised on Apple’s websites.
Network Carriers (Verizon & AT&T)
While we actually weren’t able to locate a New York cell phone carrier with iPad 2s in stock, we did manage to find a rep who had a friend selling one “privately” for $1,300. At that inflated price, we kindly declined, and suggest you do the same.
Speaking of price inflation, there’s no place better than the online mass black market that is eBay. A quick survey of the land saw all models of the iPad 2 available for purchase, albeit at prices higher than advertised by Apple. For example, there is currently a listing for an AT&T 3G 16 GB white model going for $830. This of course is $200 more than the normal price of $629, but markedly less than $1,300. So while we still don’t suggest you purchase the iPad 2 (or any product) through unofficial channels at inflated prices; if you did want to, there are possibilities to find deals that will only moderately rip you off.
So there you have. You can pre-order units from Best Buy, ask a Target store rep near you, or try your luck at eBay roulette.
If anyone plans on obtaining their iPad 2 through these methods, let us know how you fair.
