Wal-Mart Will Sell HP’s TouchPad And Accessories Amongst The Tube Socks And Discount Cereal

An HP Touchpad looming over a Wal-Mart storefront ominously.

PreCentral reports that HP is flexing their considerable market muscle to get the TouchPad tablet into as many mainstream stores as possible. While we assume it will hit Best Buy and Amazon, a tipster has confirmed that it will also grace Wal-Mart’s shelves as well. Not just the tablet, but also various accessories.

The 32GB version of the TouchPad will sell for $599, according to the tip, which is in line with the iPad 2. Accessories on offer include a charging dock/stand similar to the touchstone for Pre phones ($79.88), a webOS Bluetooth keyboard ($69.88), a case ($49.88), and an AC adapter ($29.88).

As Derek Kessler notes in his post, the accessory prices seem a bit steep, especally for the discount shopping crowd. But perhaps the idea isn’t necessarily to hit up bargain hunters but to get the product in front of people who don’t necessarily spend time just browsing the local Best Buy. Not that I would know anything about that.

Will the TouchPad be a hit at Wal-Mart (or, we assume, Target)? There’s no official release date, so we’ll just have to wait and see. But I suspect that a strategy that involves putting it in front of consumers wherever they are will do for tablets what this did for HP laptops.
