Video: WHDI Transforms Phone Into Wii-Like Gaming Remote

At CES we showed you why WHDI technology had so much potential. The company’s 5-GHz chip can stream 1080p video and exhibits considerably less latency then Intel’s Wireless Display technology. Unfortunately, WHDI hasn’t yet found a home inside notebooks or netbooks, but the company did show off a couple of nifty implementations of the tech at the Netbook Summit here in San Francisco. The first demo was of the brite-View HDelight, a USB-powered transmitter that was streaming high-def video from a notebook to a flat-panel LCD a few feet away. This wasn’t all that different than the Asus box we saw in January, but it’s slightly smaller and should retail this summer for under $200.

The more compelling demo was a Samsung Instinct HD phone attached to an oversized WHDI case equipped with HDMI input. Using the phone as a Wii-like remote, the company rep showed us how you could control gameplay on a TV. Yes, this solution is very clunky, but WHDI hopes to partner with chipmakers like Qualcomm and others so its technology could be integrated into next-generation smart phones. Who knows, maybe your cell could literally be your next gaming console.
