Not long ago, sub 4-pound notebooks were the exclusive domain of CEOs and trust fund babies. In 2008, systems like the original MacBook Air, ThinkPad X300, Voodoo Envy 233 impressed us with their low weights, but frightened us with prices well over $2,000. Fortunately, today you can get ultraportable notebooks for well under $1,000, sometimes even less $500. These systems make fantastic gifts, because even someone who already has a laptop will probably want something lighter and easier to carry.
