TV In Your Pocket: FLO TV To Begin Massive Expansion on June 12
June 10th, 2009 by Todd Haselton
FLO TV today announced that its live mobile TV service will be available in more cities nationwide immediately following the June 12th Digital TV transition. The expansion will provide service to 60 million more people in 39 new markets, bringing its reach to 100 markets total. On June 12th, Boston, Houston, Miami and San Francisco will be able to watch FLO TV on enabled phones immediately, and service will be expanded in Chicago, LA, New York, and Washington, DC. Popular devices that support the service now include AT&T’s LG Vu and Samsung Eternity as well as a couple of phones on Verizon Wireless, but Qualcomm owned FLO TV plans to spread into other devices like auto-entertainment systems through its partnership with Audiovox.
Hopefully the expansion will grab the attention of more mobile device manufacturers so that mobile TV on our handsets can become much more widespread. Over the past year alone, Nielson reports that mobile TV viewing on mobile handsets has grown 52 percent, despite the small number of devices available with FLO TV support.
