Toshiba Qosmio X505 Reviewed: Affordable Gaming Dynamo Delivers

We’ve just posted our full review of the Toshiba Qosmio X505 and, wow, were we impressed. The $1,899 system isn’t cheap, but it is a bargain compared to high-end gaming rigs like the Alienware M17x, which costs well over $4,000. For under $2k, you get a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-720QM CPU, a vivid 18.4-inch 1920×1080 screen, a Blu-ray player, and two storage drives, one of which is a blazing-fast 64GB Toshiba SSD that transferred files at light speed and booted Windows 7 in a respectable 48 seconds.

Mediaplayback was impressive and high-end games like Call of Duty: World at War and Far Cry 2 looked great. The only real chink in the system’s armor is its Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M graphics chip, which delivered impressive frame rates at lower resolutions, but came back down to earth at full HD.

We were also impressed with the snazzy, adult-friendly design: subtle red metal accents dot a piano black chassis that even a gamer over 30 can be proud to bring to a gaming party. For more detailed analysis, including benchmarks and photos, check out our full review.

    Dear Anyone,

    do you know if the Nvidia GeForce GTS 250M Graphics card is the best and/or only option for this system, or can it be upgraded to something like 260 or 280, or maybe something like the latest radion card? Also, I’we heard from some sources that the keyboard will have a back light, but I can’t seem to see that in the picture. What are the chances for the final unit to have it? And one last thing, is there a more precise release date or the laptop than just october?

    I have something to say and that is this machine is awesome and also, this lady who reviews certain notebooks needs to take her and time when she is explaining about certain things cause seems like she doesn’t know nothing about computers sheesh she annoys me with a passion!!!!! The GTS 250 is a GDDR5 card it is just about top of the line but the best part is that is GDDR5! They should have dual graphics in SLI, most likely later on when that happens you need to buy a mother board and change the graphics etc.. It would just raise the price of the machine to high! 1 gig is sufficient enough today.

    The DDR5 is there to compensate for the 128 bits datapath, not ot improve speed like in the ATI4770. So it’s only comparable to other low-High end GPU, lower then the GTX 260M but much less energie hungry. Look at nvidia web site for the ratings.

    I ordered that model, In CANADA we have a different setup. The full HD screen 1080P, I7 720Qm,6 GIG of RAM (1*4 and 1*2) and 2 * 500 GIG 5400RPM, ARGGGG. (I hope the BIOS offer’s RAID 0) and of course the bilingual keyboard. for a listed $2200 CDN.

    So us pour canadian whant big slow space. the SSD/320 GIG 7200 is much better I think.

    the price is worthy if you are pleased by the performance. are there any discounts? I want to have this one so that I can play Call of Duty: World at War.
