Toshiba NB205 is Longest-Lasting Netbook Yet. Is it the Best Ever?

nb205-iAmongst major notebook vendors, Toshiba is last to join the netbook party (at least in the U.S.) where its first entry, the mini NB205 was just released. However, unlike some vendors who have waited years to turn out unremarkable me-too systems (ex: Fujitsu’s M2010), Toshiba’s entry  is well worth the wait and could be the best 10-inch netbook of all time. The stylish NB205 is one of the best looking netbooks we’ve ever seen, it has a fantastic island-keyboard, a wide touchpad, strong performance, and–most important–the longest battery life we’ve ever seen on a netbook, with over 8.5 hours of endurance.

Here’s how the NB205 compares to other long-lasting netbooks we’ve tested:

tosh-battery-life-new

As you can see, the NB205 beat out even the the previous Champ, the MSI Wind U123, by 19 minutes. And that netbook has a whopping 9-cell battery.

So it’s best looking and it’s definitely the longest lasting, but the NB205 does have a chink in its armor. It takes a whopping 1 minute and 25 seconds to boot into XP with its default slew of trialware loaded.  Still, it might be the best netbook ever. Check out our review of the NB205 and then make up your own mind.

I have had the opportunity to see the Toshiba NB205 in action and it is one awesome piece of hardware. While not really in the same class as the ultraportable and super cheap entries, the Toshiba is a nice addition for the mobile professional to get work done on. As we all know when the wireless is kicked on and we are surfing the net, the battery is the first thing to stop us in our tracks.
Good work Toshiba for being ahead of this.

I wonder if this will be the best netbook recommended by Laptop Magazine in the magazine?

Laptopmag missed a key product weakness!

A notable weakness in the NB205 series is that both the upper and lower-end models only have a .3 MP webcam. I was particularly disappointed because Toshiba deliberately obscured this information by only discussing the presence of the webcam while opting not to include the resolution. Sad, sleazy salesmanship blemishes what would otherwise be a stellar product.

I just bought this thing… I am trusting that it is as good as this website claims! I have to add that there are few if any universal chat programs that can handle 0.3 MP for a video conference, and a 1.3 mp actually would have a larger image than can be viewed on the screen…

0.6 mega pixel is the entire screen!
