This year’s New York Toy Fair was marked by several welcome tech-influenced trends. We saw more physical games transferred to the world of smart phone and tablet apps, and even a few apps that burst into the physical world (we can’t wait to play Angry Birds: Knock On Wood again). We also noted companies blending digital and physical play to excellent effect. Plus, even more interactive, animatronic, and robotic toys than last year. 2011 is going to be a great year for tech toys and geeky kids. Here are our top 5 favorites from the show.
The idea behind the Living Game Board is actually pretty brilliant. The game board itself is a sleeve for the iPad which connects it to sensors on the physical game boards that flank it. This allows the game to know where each of the players’ pieces are, among other things. In this way, the game is truly interactive with the associated app. It achieves that nice blend between gaming on the iPad and gaming with friends or family.
