Angry Birds HD
This casual game’s cute looks are deceiving. You control a horde of viciously angry birds who want revenge on a clan of pigs who stole their eggs. The 165 levels of pure destruction are frantic and addictive. Angry Birds HD’s updated graphics over its iPhone/iPod touch counterpart are well polished, making this version well worth the investment.

Geometry Wars: Touch
The Geometry Wars franchise has flourished on a number of platforms, including mobile phones, PCs, and the Xbox, but now it’s the iPad’s turn. The premise is simple: score as many points as possible during a timed session by shooting down attacking ships. The iPad’s touch controls are simple, but you’ll have to move fast. There are a limited amount of bombs that will wipe out an entire fleet of enemy ships, otherwise you’ll have to shoot them down one by one. The graphics are vibrant and the gameplay addictive, making this iPad edition another star in the Geometry Wars universe.

Plants vs. Zombies HD
The over-the-top tower/defense game that’s currently dominating the PC charts has been faithfully recreated for the iPad. In Plants vs. Zombies, you’ll have to defend your home in 50 levels from a horde of brain-hungry zombies who simply won’t let up until you’ve become their meal. To keep the undead at bay you’ll grow a variety of zombie-busting plants, including rapid pea shooters, zombie-chomping piranha plants, walnut walls, corn catapults, angry squash, and more. The presentation and touch controls are both top-notch, and the pop culture references are hilarious. Our fave: a Michael Jackson Thriller-inspired zombie with killer dance moves.

Twin Blades HD
Twin Blades’ amazing vector-based, manga-inspired graphics are the first thing you notice when you fire up this game. The hack-and-slash/shooter gameplay is no walk in the park. Zombies will come very fast from all angles, so you’ll have to be quicker. Thankfully, both melee attacks and an assortment of long-range guns are at your disposal. Featuring four levels set in backdrops ranging from a cemetery to a chapel in ruins, the various environments are perfect for this fast-paced game of survival.
