Top 10 Amazon Appstore Apps
March 23rd, 2011 by Sarah Silbert, LAPTOP Staff Writer The Amazon Appstore for Android launched yesterday with an arsenal of 3,800 apps. But what to download, you ask? To help introduce you to the new Appstore, we rounded up our picks for the top 10 apps available thus far.
Angry Birds Rio ($0.99)
Amazon launched its Appstore for Android with a good trick up its sleeve: an exclusive on the latest saga from Rovio in addition to ad-free versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons. Making the new Angry Birds Rio a free download today is bound to win fans as well.
Asphalt HD ($4.99)
Gameloft’s street racing game brings the popping graphics and intense gameplay to your handset. Choose between eight racing events and more than 30 vehicles. Lower-end Android phones (running version 2.1 of the OS or older) are best suited to Asphalt 3: Street Rules, while higher-end Android handsets can handle Asphalt 5‘s souped-up graphics.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($1.99)
Snipe targets from a helicopter in this shooting game from developer Glu Mobile. Mission types include area defense, bomb diffusion, escort duty, hostage rescue, and infiltration.
Evernote (Free)
This free app auto-syncs your notes, photos, and more and helps you organize files for easy searching. Evernote can even index screenshots and photos snapped with your smart phone. You can add tags to organize your clippings and notes further.
File Manager Free (Free)
Use this free app to search through the files stored on your Android’s SD card. File Manager Free also gives you the option to copy, delete, move, rename, and send your files and create new ones as well.
Fruit Ninja ($0.99)
Fruit Ninja tasks you with slashing fruit with a blade to earn points. The brightly colored game includes three modes: Arcade Mode for fast-paced gameplay, Classic Mode for the standard Fruit Ninja experience, and Zen Mode for playing without bombs or power-ups.
Lookout Mobile Security (Free)
Everyone needs an anti-virus app in their arsenal, and Lookout Mobile Security fits the bill with malware and spyware blockers and scans to ensure that the apps you download are safe. Lookout Mobile also includes a Find My Phone feature that locates your handset on a map.
Shazam Encore ($4.99)
The ultimate app for discovering the name of that song you’re always hearing, Shazam Encore uses your phone’s microphone to detect the artist and title for music of all genres. Unlike the free version, this app offers unlimited song tagging.
Sketchbook Mobile ($0.99)
A full-featured drawing app, Sketchbook Mobile offers 47 brushes and customizable color palettes. You can create images with up to six layers, all of which can be scaled and rotated. Sketchbook Mobile lets you import photos into the app and can save your work in JPEG, PNG, and layered PSD formats.
WeatherBug Elite ($1.99)
Offering up-to-date weather reports and forecasts, WeatherBug Elite automatically detects your location and provides extras such as Rachel’s WeatherCast video series.
