Hands-On With Sprint’s New Android Phone, The Samsung Moment

October 7th, 2009 by Dana Wollman

DSCF1014Another day, another Android announcement. A day after Verizon embraced the OS, and a couple weeks after Sprint unveiled the HTC Hero, the carrier launched another Android headset, the Samsung Moment. The phone, which will cost $179 (with a two-year contact, $50 instant rebate, and $100 mail-in rebate) combines a gorgeous 3.2-inch AMOLED display with a full QWERTY, slide-out keyboard.

The phone also boasts an 800-MHz dedicated applications processor, a good thing to have if you plan on downloading lots of apps from Android Market. As a multimedia phone, it has a 3.2-MP camera/camcorder with auto focus, and can also accommodate memory cards as large as 32GB. Although it has stereo Bluetooth, for wireless music streaming, which is neat, we’re more relieved about the 3.5mm headphone jack. Aside from 3G, other connectivity options include Wi-FI, GPS, and stereo Bluetooth 2.0.

Most surprising about the phone is a lack of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. Instead, it runs a simple stock version of Android.

The Moment will be available on November 1.
