The Apple Netbook? Nope! But We Can Dream.
November 10th, 2008 by K. T. Bradford
If you love netbooks and Apple products, you probably read not long ago that Steve Jobs stated pretty clearly that the company wouldn’t be bringing out a mini-notebook anytime soon because they couldn’t figure out how to make a $500 laptop that’s not “a piece of junk” (perhaps you should ask Jerry Shen, Steve). He then went on to say that “…one of our entrants into that category, if you will, is the iPhone, for browsing the Internet, and doing email and all the other things that a netbook lets you do.” Leaving aside that Mr. Jobs obviously has little clue what people use their netbooks for and that, though it is a technological marvel, the iPhone’s screen is too small for a lot of those things, there is some hope that Apple will get in on netbooks. Just when they’re good and ready.
In the meantime, enterprising modders are looking to take advantage of consumer desire for such a beast. Gizmodo has pictures of a MacBook Nano, labeled Fake Fake Fake But Cool. Yeah, that about sums it up. The fake Apples are pretty little things–modded MSI Winds (which apparently run OSX just fine) with Apple logos, rebranding, and apples painted over the Window keys. Gizmodo found the images on Flickr from a user who hails from Taiwan. Many of the descriptions are in Chinese, I assume, so I can’t read if there’s any information on how I can purchase one. Not that I would, but there’s already one user asking after it.
I’m not an Apple girl, but I have to admit liking the look of these. It would also be fun to show one off around town, just to give Mac users heart attacks and garner some envious looks. However, I’m pretty sure I can’t take it to the Genius Bar if it breaks. Darn.
