2012 was an eventful year in the notebook space, with the nascent Ultrabook category finding its footing and Windows 8 inspiring a new generation of touch-friendly portables. With so much change and experimentation, we saw a number of innovative products, but not all of them were praiseworthy.
Here’s our list of the year’s best laptops, from the Apple Macbook Pro and its amazing Retina display to Lenovo’s bendable Yoga hybrid.
Competitors keep trying to catch up, but the original is still the best. The latest 13-inch Air ups the ante with a faster Ivy Bridge processor, blazing SSD and more than 8 hours of battery life, plus both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt ports. You still get the same iconic aluminum design, bright and crisp display and the best keyboard/trackpad combination we’ve ever seen in an ultraportable. All for $100 less than the previous Air.
