Like TextFree, the Google Voice application supports free voice calls and works via an alternative phone number, but users can set the app to receive calls and text messages from the original phone number too. (Carrier rates then apply, of course.) Unlike, TextFree, there's no character limit on text messages. Google Voice does something else that TextFree and TextNow do not, and that's voicemail—both audio playback and transcription, though the latter isn't always accurate. Voicemail messages appear inline with SMS texts and, similar to GMail missives, are easy to look up via search, star as a favorite, and mark as read or unread.
