Desktop Replacement Face-Off: Acer Aspire 8920G vs. HP Pavillion HDX

We at LAPTOP just love us some face offs. Just a few days ago we pitted the Asus Eee PC 701 vs. the Asus Eee PC 900 in a knock-down drag-out brawl, and last week the Sprint and Verizon versions of the BlackBerry Curve 8830 threw up the cuffs.

Today’s bout? The Acer Aspire 8920G vs the HP Pavillion HDX in a battle for multimedia supremacy. Both machines offer gorgeous displays, Blu-ray drives, and discrete graphics, but like Highlander, there can only be one. Check out the video below to see which machine came out on top.

Full Review: Acer Aspire 8920G

In our mini-review of the Acer Aspire 8920G a few days ago, we mentioned we were impressed with the machine’s gorgeous Gemstone Blue design, Media Console touch controls, and powerful 5.1 CineSurround audio, but many wondered how it would fare under more rigorous testing.

Acer Aspire 8920G Mini-Review

Last month, at Acer’s “Blue” press event, the company took the wraps off an absolutely stunning machine that represents its big push in the consumer market: the Aspire 8920G notebook. This morning, the system arrived in our offices to much fanfare, as the look of the notebook makes you just want to reach out and touch it-which is precisely Acer’s goal.

Unique Media Console

What immediately jumped out at us was the dramatic revamping of the Gemstone design. This new Gemstone “blue” design consists of a slick blue, black, and silver color scheme, textured NeoWeave palmrest and touchpad, illuminated power button, Acer logo on the lid, and status indicators. The best use of the illumination is in the Acer CineDash Media Console, a touch-sensitive interface positioned left of the keyboard that lets you control music and videos.
