Study: 40 Percent of e-Reader Shoppers Planning on Buying an iPad
March 5th, 2010 by Dana Wollman
Uh oh. Here’s a bleak stat for Amazon. In a new survey, 40 percent of people looking to buy an eReader said they were planning on purchasing an iPad, which will be available for sale April 3.
In the survey, conducted by ChangeWave, 40 percent of 3,171 participating Amazon.com users said their e-Reader would be an iPad. In contrast, 28 percent reported they would buy an Amazon Kindle.
Based on numbers alone, it’s difficult to tell if consumers tentatively prefer the iPad because of its color screen, multimedia capabilities, or support for 140,000-plus iPhone/iPod Touch apps (not to mention forthcoming ones designed specifically for the iPad). Alternatively, it’s also possible they’re just more aware of the iPad, thanks to ceaseless media coverage earlier this year.
Either way, that premature momentum isn’t good news for the Kindle.

I’m not too sure why Amazon would be too worried. Anyone buying an iPad will also be able to run the Amazon Kindle app (which is good on the iPhone and will be great on the iPad) Sure Amazon will lose out on some Kindle sales, but I think their model is that it’s more important for people to by their ebooks from Amzon. Amazon is much better off with someone buying an iPad than someone buying a Barnes & Noble Nook.
