Start-Up Spotlight: Which Of These Five New Tech Companies Excites You The Most?

comiXology: Digital Comics On Mobile Devices

comiXology started in 2007 as a site to find information about upcoming comic books. Two of the founders, John Roberts and David Steinberger, each had different issues with the technology available for comic book fans. For David, it was a lack of information about historical comics making it difficult to catalog his personal collection. For John, it was that there was no practical system for discovering or keeping track of the new comics that shipped each week. We started exploring the market, and discovered many, many technological holes for consumers as well as brick-and mortar retailers. After researching the market for the NYU | Stern Business Plan Competition, we realized there was a great opportunity to make tools (and eventually, a digital comics platform) for, and comiXology was born.

The Coolest Thing About comiXology

The people who work with us. The comiXology team — we have an amazing group of people who love comics, from our data entry to the people who put together the comics for the app — our partners in retail and publishing, and especially the readers. We’re truly lucky to be part of molding such a passionate community. It makes everything we do worthwhile.

We have continued to service that market with apps, services for retailers and expansion of our website. In 2009 we launched into digital comic distribution as well. We’re in a really unique position in that we work with brick-and-mortar retailers to increase their exposure and sell digital comics from major and independent publishers. In that way, we’ve become a “super-mediator” of the comic industry, rather than a conduit for disintermediation. We firmly believe that the current limits to the physical distribution of comics allow digital to be the new gateway to new comic buyers in print, as well. That’s why we include a retailer locater in each product we create.

Since the start, comiXology has been setting the foundation for comic book proliferation, making it easier for everyone to discover popular and niche comics suiting every reader regardless of interest. If readers can find comics in stores, on their phones, online, basically anywhere, then we can make more true fans worldwide.
