Sprint to Sell 4G WiMax Version of BlackBerry PlayBook

January 6th, 2011 by Avram Piltch, LAPTOP Online Editorial Director

A little more than an hour after RIM announced it would be selling Wi-Fi only versions of the BlackBerry PlayBook through a number of retail outlets, the company said it will also be selling a 4G WiMax version of the device through Sprint. As with the Wi-Fi only versions, there’s no word on pricing or availability, but by going with 4G rather than 3G, RIM has a distinct advantage over competitors who use the older, slower standard.

Check out hands-on with the BlackBerry PlayBook for more details on the device.

    Is there an expected cost?

    They haven’t said.

AFAIK all new tablets will run off respective US 4G wireless networks. No real advantage to RIM in this regard. In fact by limiting themsevles to Sprint’s 4G they are limiting market share opportunities. I believe most corporate buffs purchasing this device will opt for a Wi-Fi only option or an alternate one with LTE/HSPA + 4G global service.
