Yes, it’s the Sony Xperia Play, a.k.a the Playstation Phone! But no, it’s not coming to a store near you anytime soon. If you’ve been following every clandestine shot and tidbit of news about this smart phone for dedicated mobile gamers, you’ll be happy to know both it and its Sony PlayStation-esque controls have been outed, photographed, tested, and captured on video tap-dancing through various PlayStation and GameBoy games.
The team over at Engadget has been testing the Sony Xperia Play for a few days now and haven’t wasted any time uncovering specs, testing game play, and otherwise fiddling with the smart phone/gaming platform. Here’s a rundown of the specs in their review unit:
In Engadget’s testing, they were impressed with the Xperia Play’s build quality, sharp camera, and the uniquely attractive, custom UI it has on top of Android. Unfortunately, the sample unit didn’t come with any preloaded games that take advantage of the device’s dual D-Pads, so Engadget installed both PSP and Gameboy Advance emulators so they could try a few classic titles.
Sony Ericsson hasn’t released pricing or availability yet, but we’d be surprised if the company didn’t make this handset official at Mobile World Congress next month . For now, you can get more details on the Play, see it in video action, and watch an Engadget editor get crushed in Gundam Assault 2 in Engadget’s preview.
