In today’s world, smartphones have replaced point and shoots as our camera of choice. Whether you’re a shutterbug or simply enjoy taking casual photos with friends, there’s no denying that smartphones play an important role in how we capture and share images. But which phone camera is the best?
For our first annual Smartphone Camera Shooutout, we tested nine leading devices from all the major brands. This contest is not about which phone offers the flashiest features. We tested each handset under a variety of conditions to determine which one truly captures the most accurate, colorful and detailed images.

With assistance and analysis from our staff photographer, we ranked each photo in each round from 1 to 9 and then averaged each phone’s rank across all of our tests to determine a winner.
Editors’ Note: The photos are arranged from best to worst, with 9 being the lowest rank and 1 being the highest.
