Smart Phone Madness Game 14: HTC Thunderbolt vs. HTC Evo Shift 4G

Mar 30, 2011 12:01 AM EDT by Michael A. Prospero, LAPTOP Reviews Editor

In the first semifinal, the HP (née Palm) Pre 3 trounced the BlackBerry Torch by a wide margin, and advanced to the final, which will be held Friday, April 1. Joining the Pre 3 will be either the HTC Thunderbolt or the HTC Evo Shift 4G. Which one will it be? It’s up to you to decide.

This game pits brother against brother: Two HTC phones going up against each other. That’s not all they have in common: Both get 4G data; one via Verizon Wireless’ LTE network, the other using Sprint’s. Both can be used as wireless hotspots, and both run Android 2.2 with HTC’s Sense overlay. But that’s where the similarities end.

The Thunderbolt (which we recently reviewed) has an EVO-sized 4.3-inch screen, a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM 8655 processor, 8GB + 768MB of RAM, and a 32GB microSD card. The Evo Shift 4G–which earned 4 out of 5 stars when we reviewed it–has a smaller 3.6-inch screen, a slower 800-MHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 2GB of ROM. The Thunderbolt front and rear-facing cameras, where the Shift 4G only has a camera on the back. However, the Shift 4G has a slide-out keyboard, which some prefer, and it lasted much longer than the Thunderbolt.

This poll will remain open until midnight on Thursday.

  4. Abe says WebOS rules!! Says:

Interesting that in ’09 the Pre was Sprint’s flagship phone and in ’10 the Evo was Sprint’s flagship phone. I think the Pre3 will win this and will become Sprint’s flagship phone in ’11.

  5. Bill Library Says:

It always boils down to choosing an Android phone for 2nd place to a Palm phone. Personally, I think the shift would be easier to beat… but ya never know! I played with a thunderbolt yesterday. It’s like an EVO-2, but it’s not webOS…
