Smart Phone Madness Game 11: Motorola Atrix 4G vs. Palm Pre 3

We’re getting closer and closer to the final four teams left in the 2011 Smart Phone Madness tournament!

Today’s game features the Motorola Atrix 4G, which pulled off a stunning upset of the iPhone 4 in the first round, and the Palm Pre 3, which easily dispatched the LG Optimus 3D.

Here’s what we said about the phones in the first round:

When we first saw the Palm Pre 3 at HP’s webOS launch event (check out our hands-on gallery), we were struck by its larger size–it has a 3.6-inch screen compared to the Palm Pre’s 3.1-inch screen–the 800 x 480-pixel resolution, and its large, comfortable keyboard. Inside, this 5.5-ounce device has a 1.4-GHz Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM, and 8 or 16GB of internal storage. When it comes out this summer, it will sport a 5-MP camera on a back (with LED flash), a VGA camera on the front, Bluetooth 2.1, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and mobile hotspot capability. While a carrier hasn’t been announced, we’re pretty sure plenty of webOS fans will be excited to get this device in their hands.

While it’s now been proved that the “4G” part of the Atrix 4G is kind of bogus, that doesn’t mean this Android 2.2 smart phone doesn’t have anything going for it. This Tegra 2-powered device has a near-iPhone like 4-inch qHD screen with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, a front-facing VGA camera and a rear-facing 5-mp camera with an LED flash. The Atrix 4G also has the coolest accessories: A laptop dock that turns this phone into a mini notebook (complete with tab-equipped web browser), and an entertainment dock that, when used with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, lets you browse the web and watch movies on a large-screen TV. Check out our full review of the Atrix 4G.

I’m confident that Atrix will win it all the way! Truly, this is a device that will change the way we use mobile phone. Where can you see a phone that turns into a laptop and desktop in an instant? Hands down to Motorola for this innovation, I’m sure this is just the beginning of a new change. Now iPhone 4 has a true competition with Atrix. Unfortunately, because this device is new, there are very limited cases for this device.

  2. Ryan Says:

Is that the right poll? I thought we were voting on the Pre 3 and the Atrix, not browsers.

  3. Bob's Hope Says:

ATRIX ALL THE WAY! Sorry Apple, you guys lost the torch a long time ago. The iPhone 4 was never top of the line (except for its display resolution) and the iPhone 5 is gonna be a big fat disappointment. The Atrix is king right now because of one thing–the Tegra 2 processor smokes the rest of the wannabe dual core chips. Webtop is cool and all, but your “suppose” to be extra for it and it’s laggy. True HDMI mirroring (like the LG Optimus 2X) is the way to go. Atrix is capable of it, but AT&T likes to lock these things out as it would make the webtop useless and unprofitable.

  4. Pound Says:

Well clearly the Pre 3 has the best OS available. Everyone tries to multitask now, more companies are starting to use cards. Tap to share is going to be great, video chat that works…

And can we please get the right poll up? The only poll I see is a web browser poll…

  5. Anna Attkisson Says:

The correct poll is now linked.

  6. i told u Says:

yeah these android people are funny dont matter if you put a hemi under the hud of this OS its pales in comparsion to Webos Period. Also the Pre 3 has essentially every high end spec you need for a smartphone, so with great hardware and specs now, this poll is no contest except for WP7 which is right behind webos.

  7. Sin Says:

I tried the Atrix last night at an ATT store. It felt a little sluggish. Docking with the notebook attachment is kind of neat, but reminiscent of my first 600 MHz Celeron notebook. Speed of the Pre 3 is yet to be known though and the only indicator is the Pre 2.

  8. Jake Says:

LMAO at “i told you so” that is the best comment ever about (h)Androids fans.

  9. rick Says:

in regards to what sin said, the pre 3’s speed is 1.4 GHZ, it also has a bigger screen and is comparable with touch to share.

  10. blazepr Says:

webos is the best OS out there.

  11. Abe says WebOS rules!! Says:

I don’t think there is any Android device that can be even remotely close to the usefulness any WebOS device has. The Pre3 is just the beginning of an amazing WebOS near future!!

  12. palmbeatsandroid Says:

voted with my palm pre plus

    PRE 3 all da way

  13. Steve-O Says:

    Pre3 rocks!

  14. rich Says:

pre by a mile. I’m writing this on a galaxy tab. Such a pain. Android is a mess! Too rushed, I won’t be getting another. its not much better than Wm6. but webos is easy to use, you know what’s running cause without having to double click the home but then open task manager, then end tasks. Why are they called tasks. That’s not what they are. Its like absolutely no thought went into it. The cards metaphor on webos makes me smile every time I flick one off the screen. Being able to be on a call and browse the web and switch to my contacts and then back to the web, maybe even check my emails and send a text message, webos is great and the pre 3 will do it better than any pre before.

  15. gadfly Says:

Strange introduction to the two phones. Everyone should know that the Atrix’s 4inch qHD screen is bigger and better than Pre3’s 3.6 inch screen. Not understand why the pre3’s 3.6 screen is highlighted.
Even we don’t care the android’s leading place than webOS, and the huge amount free applications in android, only the webtop functionality is a big attraction of Atrix.

  16. Slade Says:

Ok i dont get how the Pre 3 is getting so much rating lol. I like webos but it feels more like a multitasking panel instead of a whole os. While the Pre 3 is a nice well deserve improvement you have to think about it. Its serious a step behind all the phones in its time frame especially the Atrix. I guess everybody thats hoping Pre 3 to be a success might be disappointed, unless they up the specs they are a bit behind like Nokia.

  17. Egjc Says:

Everyone knows that WebOS is the best. Unfortunately, I have to wait until JUNe Or JULY to get my hands on one. When will companies get it? They need to release the product while people are still excited. I mean, really????? How hard is it to do that? Why do they announce a product and not release it for 6 MONTHS (!!!!!!!)?. This is Apple’s trick. Thy release products while people are still excited. It’s not difficult. I have had webOS and android in the last two years. Now I have an iPhone. And I just bought it because of impulse. I HATE this phone. I am going to purchase a Pre 3 outright just because I want to get rid of this iPhone so bad. The OS is terrible. Stable, but so limited. And there are so many things about it that make you say “who the he’ll thought of this? It’s horrible.”

Anyway, yay for Pre 3, Touchpad, and WebOS.

  18. yarx Says:

I vote Atrix and webtop. No webOS. That’s all.

  19. MAMISHO Says:

  20. UsedToPre Says:

I guess the ATRIX just outclasses the HP by a longshot, but where is the Samsung Charge in this competition? That is the phone to beat. Who needs all these slow phones when you can have 4G (LTE is the only true 4G)?

  21. Kevin PALM PRE Says:

People we all know why ALL these manufactures are using the Android OS… but is it better. Hand DOWN all the way the Palm Pre is the Ultimate Techie phone in terms of accessibility; FTP, Email, Terminal access, back end support… etc… Its already my own little “one handed” laptop. The ease of the device is non-comparable as I can do everything on it with one hand… so i think thats called Multitasking while i Multitask on my device. And I’m talking 1st Generation Palm Pre for sprint phone. The OS Works beautifully, and I can see Cards taking over Windows in no time now… esp… just looking at the new WebOS 2.0… TRUE OS.

So Everything above will only get better with Palm Pre 3 especially if on Sprint (despite their cust service… best NETWORK)

Android will only get smaller and smaller due to their open resourcefulness and bad OS… which does not go will with popularity, thus why the only smart phone that NEEDS a Virus Scanner… real smart. I wonder how much money Google is spending on Advertisement$… and Manufacturer push.

Iphones, like Macs have their cult following which is cool and all, but im not drinking out of the punch bowl. If they are happy with a standard phone with no real functions and 100,000s of kiddie apps then so am I.

WebOS is a true Winner… and with Hardware Innovators like HP… imagine… I’m also looking forward to the future of WebOS as well as its hosts like Palm Pre and Touchpad.

  22. Kevin PALM PRE Says:

And ohh forgot to add.. but for some reason I just loves a phone that can really fit in my pocket instead of “is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me”

  23. Abe says WebOS rules!! Says:

    How long is this competition?

  24. JAG Says:

I’m with the Pre 3. WebOS is simply THE best OS around. It is just built around multi-tasking – and we live in a multi-tasking world. The OS is simple, clean, flows together incredibly well – and it just MAKES SENSE! I can’t wait to get my hands on one. I’ve had a Moto Droid since the first day it was released and loved it for a while but the OS is just clunky and cumbersome and I can’t wait to get rid of it!

I’m willing to deal with a thin app catalog for now until the rest of the world catches on to this OS.

  25. Herinel Says:

You palm fans are idiots, dont you see that your favored OS accounts for less than 3% of the smartphone market? WebOS is trash, it might be better on tablets, who knows, but as far as phone OS goes Android has everyone beat. So my vote is for the Atrix, you know, the phone thats actually better than anything palm has to offer right now.

  26. Stevo Says:

Tisk tisk… Atrix would have been awesome if it wasn’t for the “you just bought another laptop” dock.

    Get real, Motorola.

  27. ben Says:

The tears of Andriod fan boi taste soo good!!!! HP all the way!!!

  28. Eric Treesh Says:

As a Pre Plus owner, I can’t wait till the Pre 3 is available. My wife has an Android. It’s pretty but I love the Pre.

  29. xia cao Says:

    pre3 great!

  30. tito Says:

definetly palm 3 is the best smart phone
