SkyTone Shows Off Google Android Netbook

androidAccording to its Web site, Chinese manufacturer SkyTone is releasing a  Google Android netbook called the Alpha-680. Judging by initial pictures, the device will have a rotating screen that can be folded down to convert the netbook into a tablet. Specs include a skimpy 1GB of flash memory (up to 4GB), an 800 x 480-pixel, 7-inch display, as well as an ARM11 CPU clocked at 533 MHz. We’ve noted in the past that analysts expect ARM processors to be responsible for as much as 55 percent of the netbook market by 2012.  No wonder ComputerWorld says that it’s only $100. We’d prefer a beefier system, and maybe even one that combines NVIDIA’s Tegra with Android.  The device should also support GPRS/CDMA/EDGE and WCDMA networks, although there’s no mention that it has Qualcomm’s GOBI technology inside. We’re skeptical as to its legitimacy, too, given that a second spec sheet lists “Linux 2.6″ as its operating system while the rest of the specs remain the same. Furthermore, a second picture of the netbook shows the system running a full version of Firefox, a browser not yet available on the Android operating system. The company also says specs are subject to change without any notice. It looks like it’s available in white, black, yellow, pink, and red, but we have yet to find an actual selling location. via [liliputing]
