Should Netbooks Have Strapholders?

netbookstrapsOn the GeekFeminism blog there’s an interesting thread in the comments on the Samsung promo video post about carrying netbooks outside of a bag. If you recall, there’s a scene in the N140 vid where Maria carries the netbook by it’s corner. Not practical, perhaps, but it makes a good shot. A commenter named Azz thinks this means the outer shell has non-slip coating so one wouldn’t be worried about it slipping from your hand and smashing on the pavement. Though I’m not convinced of that, I was intrigued by this idea:

“…a sturdy and decorative hand strap and/or a place to attach one might be a very useful feature in a netbook, much like the cellphone leash on a larger scale.”

Liz Henry agrees and says laptop manufacturers are “missing out” by not providing anchor points for straps. I agree, and not just for fashion netbooks like the ones HP rolled out this week. Like Azz, I would like the security of a strap when carrying my netbook around. Obviously not for a whole day, but maybe when quickly running to meetings.

Always on/Instant on smartbooks are on the horizon, and a strap could make them even more readily accessible and convenient.

Do you think laptop manufacturers should incorporate a notch for attaching straps in future designs?

    Totally agree. Great idea.

Every netbook already has one – just fashion something that will work in the Kensignton lock and strap around your wrist.
This should be something that almost anyone can do for a next-to-nothing price

As a guy, I personally find it a little too feminine for me to use. However, I think that for those that want to use it a great idea is to use the security lock port to attach one.

My HP Mini 1010NR has a place on the rear corner of the main section for securing a lanyard loop.
