Sharp Galapagos Color eReaders Head To Japan Next Week, US Release Doubtful

The tablet gold rush is in full effect as  Sharp announced the launch date of their Galapagos tablets / eReaders. A 5.5inch an d10.-inch model are expected to be released in Japan. December 10th is the date in question for their launch in the Japanese market. Will US consumers get their chance on with them soon after?

Pricing for the 5-inch Galapagos with a  1024 x 600 display and up to 7 hours battery of battery life will be 39,800 yen, or approximately $360. The 10.8-inch model will feature a 1366 x 800 display resolution and is priced at 54,800 yen or approximately $460 US. Both models are expected to run Android though no word yet on which version of the OS or the processor will power each device. Pre-orders will start this week for both models.

Will the Galapagos eReaders make their way into the US market soon after? Nothing has been confirmed so far, but we wouldn’t hold our breath on it. Neither will Ching-Li Tor at CNN Go noting that if it the s;ates are brought to the US they may appear under a different name. Japan-based web industry consultant, Dr Serkan Toto told CNN Go that, “Sharp designed a device that’s tailor-made for Japan, especially regarding the contents platform, so I’m not expecting an international roll-out anytime soon.”
