Seagate Launches GoFlex Slim, 9mm Thick USB Hard Drive
We were impressed with Seagate’s 9mm-thick USB hard drive when we first spotted it at CES 2011 and now the storage company has made it official, launching the newly-named GoFlex Slim today. Initially available in only a 320GB capacity, the 7200-rpm USB 3.0 drive carries an MSRP of $99 is available immediately at major e-tailers such as Amazon.com as well as through Seagate’s site.
The initial drive works on both PCs and Macs, but a special Mac-only version that comes in HFS+ format and has a metallic finish that matches the Apple aesthetic will be coming out in May for the same $99 price. Because of its formatting, the Mac version will be able to support Apple Time Machine backup software.
We look forward to testing one of the new GoFlex Slim drives so stay tuned for our results.

I’m not sure that this is such a revolutionary improvement in data portability. The footprint is the same as a normal portable hard disk. Sure it’s 9mm thick instead of 14-15 mm thick. But it’s not going to change the way you carry it around. It’s certainly not going on your keychain like a USB flash drive. But I suppose it will match the new Macbook air or Samsung 9 series laptops, so owners won’t have to be embarrassed by carrying a portable hard drive that’s fatter than their laptop.
