Performance & Power: Samsung RF510 and RF710 Pack Core i5 and Core i7

September 2nd, 2010 by Anna Attkisson, LAPTOP Managing Editor

On the heels of several other notebook announcements, including the QX410, the NF Series, and the SF510, Samsung added to powerful new systems to their lineup with the 15.6-inch RF510 ($899) and the 17-inch RF710 ($999). Aimed at the gamer/multimedia enthusiast crowd, both sport a subtle swirl pattern on the lid, while packing Nvidia 330M GPU, 1GB video memory, and Intel’s Turbo Boost technology under the hood. These two systems also bring USB 3.0 to Samsung notebooks. The RF510 includes Intel Core i5, while the bigger brother packs Core i7, 640GB of storage, and a Blu-ray drive. The RF710 will be sold exclusively through Tiger Direct.

You state that the Samsung RF710 will sell for around $999.00 and be available only from Tigerdirect…their website lists the RF710 on SALE for $1,099.00 AFTER an immediate SAVINGS of $400.00…in other words, they are stating their regular price for the RF710 is $1,499.00

This is the problem with exclusive retailer programs. They lie through their teeth about the “regular” price and offer you a “sale” price that is still inflated.

I love Samsung…and was very interested in this laptop…but with Tigerdirect having the exclusive rights to sell it…I’ll pass.

Agreed. Like the product but not the store that sells it. I have research a lot of laptops with core i7/BD combo and this is one of the best deal. Solid product with a reasonable price tag.

Picked up the rf710 it up this weekend from CompUSA, have also seen it at Circuit City.TigerDirect is not the exclusive provider of this computer, it is out there, although with limited availability. It is exactly what I wanted, Intel i7,17.3 ledscreen, blu-ray, 640gb hard drive with another hd drive bay available for running 2 hard drives, which I plan on adding a 500 gb SSD as well. 4gb memory upgradeable to 6gb was a little on the low side as I’d prefer 8gb, but was pleasantly surprised with the overall performance. Can play music interruption free over bluetooth 3.0+ from my iphone over the computer speakers, functioning as a remote. USB 3.0 is fantastic, as is the ability to charge my phone through the computer while the it is off.The island style keyboard has a great tactile feel, better than MacBook Pro. Watched Inglorious Bastersds on blu-ray, quality was excellent, from almost any angle. The color of the actual laptop is a very beautiful glossy black, not the wierd blue/graphite sheen finish they portray with the pictures unless. If you leave the actual plastic guard protecting the surface of the laptop on it creates that wave pattern they show reflecting light in the pictures. The geforce 330m is on the low end of Nvidia’s current offerings, but at the price point I feel as though a higher end GTS or GTX 4 series or more etc is unreasonable. 1GB of discrete graphics is plenty, and running modern warfare 2 at max settings performs flawlessly. Overall for around $1000, this laptop is everything I wanted and more. My brother currently owns an Asus G73a1 monster and sis has got a 09′ MacBook Pro , and this is by far the best, combining the overall package of both.

CompUSA website is operated by TigerDirect, so in the end it still is TigerDirect selling.

Not if you physically walk into a CompUsa store like I did…

    Jake,

You said that the 710 has the 2 drive bays for the extra HDD. Would you happen to know if the 510 also has this? Tiger Direct lists that 2 bays are available (one in use, one extra) in the specs, but I cannot find it on Samsung site, nor anywhere else, that confirms this.

If Tiger Direct is right, I may have found my true love. Thought about getting the 17 inch, but decided that the extra inch or two was just not what I really wanted. Just a little too bulky for me. Though I would definitely love the higher resolution and blu-ray drive. And why would Samsung, in my opinion the best TV manufacturer, not have the biggest, baddest, most kick-arse monitor on this machine? It truly astonished me. But everything else that I understand about this machine I love. Hope it works for me. Thanks for your input.

Bought the RF740 at Best Buy in Canada for $799 today … have yet to play around with it, but seems like a steal at this price
