Samsung NC20 NewEgg.com Availability Delayed to Early April

March 18th, 2009 by Joanna Stern

samsung_nc20usa_leadTwo weeks ago we reported that Samsung had decided to bring its NC20 netbook to the US of A exclusively through NewEgg.com. Though Samsung hoped to start selling the 12-inch netbook on March 16, it now plans to have it up for sale during the first week of April. The U.S. version will be available in black only and will have a larger 5900 mAH capacity battery (up from the 5200 mAH which is available overseas). According to Samsung, it will be $549 on NewEgg.com, slightly more than the $478 it costs overseas (currently it is £399 on Amazon.Uk). Check out our review of the Samsung NC20. The review is based on our experiences with a Taiwanese version of the NC20. We will be updating the review in the coming days with our impressions of the U.S. version which we are currently testing.

You may want to upgrade to 2 GB of RAM and do your benchmarks again. The NC20 appears to be able to make better use of the extra RAM than the NC10 because of the Nano processor. To make it a fair fight, use an NC10 that has been upgraded to 2 GB of RAM for comparison.

FYI, I am basing the 2 GB RAM idea on a post from an NC20 user in the UK:

“The NC20 is quicker than the NC10, but it is not a revolution in performance by any means, more of an evolution. I don’t have any benchmark results to quantify my findings but having used the NC20 for just over a week now, I am confident it is a little quicker.

Generally, Firefox seems to run quite a bit faster on the NC20 and MS Office seems to run faster too. Windows XP in general is a little bit snappier. Also, I have noticed that the graphics chip assigns 256MB graphics RAM once it detects 2GB of system RAM. 128MB is assigned with the stock 1GB RAM. Once I upgraded to 2GB RAM, I did notice that Google Earth ran a bit smoother.

RE: battery life… I have managed to get between 4 to 5 hours out of the NC20 with normal use (web browsing, MS Office use) whereas the NC10 gets between 5 and 6 hours.”

It may be that the NC10 does the same thing when the RAM is doubled, but I don’t remember anyone reporting this.

You reviewed a Taiwanese version? Not Korean version?

I don’t see the logic behind selling NC20 ‘exclusively on newegg.com’. The logical way to sell it in USA is on Amazon.com not some secondary seller like newegg. I wouldn’t be surprised if this gossip doesn’t come true similar to the previous one it was going to be available on March 16 on newegg….

“not some secondary seller like newegg”

Uh, Newegg is definitely not a ‘secondary seller.’ That’s like saying the president of the United States is secondary in power. Newegg has an infinitely better reputation than Amazon. Amazon is great with its second day trial shipping, but when it comes to trust and reliability, there is no company online that is better than Newegg.

Take a look at their reseller ratings:
    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Amazon
    http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Newegg

    Amazon: 6.36/10

    Newegg: 9.76/10

I’m interested in the alleged 1080p capability using various codecs. H264 subtitled MKV’s, QuickTime AVC’s, Microsoft WMV’s, and HD YouTube flash videos have achieved different results despite all being 1080p. The CoreAVC decoder is often mentioned on forums as being the best way to get smooth 720p playback on current netbooks. I’d like to see some tests with each of those formats in 1080p on the NC20.

Samsung US website says that max memory for NC20 is 1GB, did anybody actually updated NC20 with 2GB?
