Samsung NC10 Unboxed, On the Way
October 24th, 2008 by admin
From the time it was first announced, mobility geeks around the world have salivated over the Samsung NC10 netbook. It’s yet another 10-inch, Intel Atom-based, Windows-XP-toting netbook so why the excitement?
Well, the NC10 is the first Samsung netbook, it has some nice shiny metal on the sides, and everyone is hoping it will have the creature comforts so many netbooks lack: a spacious keyboard and touchpad with keys and buttons in appropriate places, a sharp screen, a long-lasting battery, and a cooling system that prevents the chassis from turning into a griddle.
We don’t know yet what to make of the NC10, but we can’t wait to put the system through its paces. We were so eager that we contacted an acquaintance in Korea, where the system has already hit store shelves, and got him to pick one up for us and stick it in the mail. We expect to get our unit on Monday, but in the meantime, here are some pictures our friend took of the NC10 before sending it out. You’ll notice in some of these, he’s placed it next to a MacBook for size comparison.

looking forward to the review… get it out asap – I have a pre-order and want to know if I should cancel and buy a different system -)

Gah I’m dying to get my hands on one of these. I’ve had a blue one on pre-order at Play.com for three weeks now. They still have their UK release set on the 1st of November, but I’ve seen a few others like Amazon saying they’ll be in as late at the 17th. I can’t wait that long! Like Mark says, if this reviews badly I guess I’ll be buying something else, like maybe the new 6-cell Wind from eBuyer. Don’t let me down Samsung…

Also, while I’m at it, thanks you for the pictures. These things are on the shelves in Korea already and I can barely find any new pictures, and certainly no YouTube video. Had to make do with scraps for weeks. Dammit!

I also cant wait for the review!! My pre-order is expected to be delivered on the 8th of November and I bought it for 379 euros including shipping costs.
I’m very curious about the build quality and keyboard experience and ofcourse about battery life but probably that will be around 5 hours in normal use with wi-fi on. That’s good enough for me. The 8 hours they say I don’t expect to get.
Also would like to know if their is a sim-cardslot (3G) just behind the battery.

I find it pretty odd that there is no reference to the display, either on this picture set, the recent hands on or the one coming from Ukraine. What gives?
Does not anybody feel at least a little curious about the display? I, for one, would like to know if it is a back-lit LED display and how it compares against the other netbooks (Wind, Aspire One or Dell Mini).
Any chance that you, lucky guys, elaborate quite a bit on the NC10 display.
Thanks a lot.

When you write the review make sure you identify the NC10’s best/closest competitors (Wind, Aspire One, Lenovo). Also, make sure you state what characteristics make each the strongest in a particular characteristic. A chart would be useful.

would be nice to know for certain if the RAM can be upgraded more than the 1GB included. The manual says only 1GB but some suggest you could get more.

The manual contradicts itself. It tells you how to upgrade to 2 gigs in one part, then another part with the specs says it is 1 gig max. I think it is upgradeable. Also the manual shows that the UK and the US ones have different keyboards! No large right shift key for us Brits, but we do get a bigger Enter key, which I like.

That’s a picture of the keyboard layout from the manual, by the way.

Actually it doesn’t mention anything about 2 gig of RAM in the manual. Sorry for hogging this board!

Page 5 of the maual says “There is one memory slot provided on this computer. It supports 2GB memory max. To upgrade to 2GB of memory, replace the current memory with a 2GB memory module”.

I think it is because XP ULCPC support only 1 GO RAM but the NC10 support 2 Go…

Are we in consensus then that the NC10 can be upgraded to 2GB RAM?
