Samsung’s rugged Galaxy S4 Active offered consumers the functionality of the company’s popular S4 with the added benefit of protection from dust and the ability to survive in up to 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. And it appears that the concept was so well received by smartphone buyers that Samsung is making a similar version for its Galaxy S5.
According to notorious Twitter tipster @evleaks, the Galaxy S5 Active is headed to AT&T and Sprint, in addition to other carriers, though an exact release date hasn’t been revealed. The leak also lacks any information regarding the smartphone’s specs or what it will look like. The S4 Active offered a more robust design than the standard S4 complete with a rubber plug for its micro USB port and a beefier design.

It would make sense then, that the S5 Active would feature similar design qualities. While the S4 Active could survive a good deal of punishment, its specs were a bit of a step down from the original S4. The handset’s camera, for example was downgraded from 13-megapixels to 8-megapixels and it used an LCD display rather than an AMOLED panel, though the later was to ensure users could see the screen better in direct sunlight.
Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is already water and dust resistant, though it can’t survive the kind of abuse the S4 Active can take. Still, it will be interesting to see if Samsung gives the S5 Active additional capabilities, such as drop protection. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait to find out if the rumored device is indeed real.
