Samsung Announces 2560 x 1600 PenTile Display: Will It Be on the iPad 3?

Thought the iPad 2′s 1024 x 768-pixel screen was the last word in high-resolution tablet displays? How wrong you were. According to TUAW, at the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium next week, Samsung will demonstrate a 10.1-inch display with a whopping 2560 x 1600 resolution (1440p).

Rumors are already circulating that this revved-up display, with double the resolution of the iPad 2, will make it onto the next generation of Apple’s tablet. The Samsung’s 10.1-inch display is slightly larger than the iPad 2′s 9.7-inch form factor,  but the fact that Samsung used the low-power, high-res PenTile technology on this display—which Apple has previously considered using—is fueling the story that it could show up on the iPad 3. However, Apple has historically favored in-plane switching technology over PenTile, and the company is unlikely to make the switch now.

In a press release, Samsung said that the upcoming display uses 40 percent less power than the average LCD screen. There’s also an outdoor mode for viewing the screen in brighter environments. So far the display has yet to be seen in action—let alone on any particular tablet. And despite the iPad 3 rumors, this display might be destined for future incarnations of Samsung’s own Galaxy Tabs. For now, all that remains to be seen—check back in for further developments as they come.
