Those waiting for the next iPad may only have to wait another 3 months or so. Today, Citigroup Analyst Richard Gardner revealed that Asian suppliers are ramping up iPad production for March to prepare for high demand of the new model, which will have “double the screen resolution of the current model.”
Considering that the current generation iPad has a 1024 x 768 screen at a time when Android competitors are at 1280 x 800 and climbing, Apple needs to increase its pixel density to remain competitive. Previous rumors have pegged the new display resolution as either 2048 x 1536 or 1600 x 1200.
Also, today, Japanese blog Macotkara reported that the new, higher-res iPad screen will increase the thickness of the chassis a bit so third party cases will not be compatible. However, Apple’s own Smart Covers will continue to work with the new tablet.
