Rumor: HP Is Killing The Slate

April 30th, 2010 by K. T. Bradford

Say it ain’t so! TechCrunch is reporting that a “source who’s been briefed on the matter” says that HP has killed their tablet computer, the Slate. The reason? There are many, apparently. To begin with, the ‘meh’ heard ’round the world a couple of weeks ago when some Italian bloggers got their hands on the Slate. Then there’s the lack of crazed interested even though HP kept trying to drum up more. And the TechCrunch article sites that the OS and CPU are also a concern:

“Our source tells us that HP is not satisfied with Windows 7 as a tablet operating system… [and] may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry.”

So is the Slate stepping aside for the Android tablets HP announced earlier this month? When we reached out to the company for a statement, they would only say that they “don’t comment on rumors or speculation.” All right, but if they were truly going forward with this product that’s been hyped since January and they keep promoting as a better alternative to the iPad, don’t you think they’d be a little more forceful than ‘we don’t comment on rumors’?

Or maybe HP is just playing this one close to the chest to see what consumers have to say. Are there a bunch of disappointed Slate fanboys out there or are more people saying “Well thank goodness they dropped that product, now they can concentrate on making an Android tablet or, even better, a webOS one”?

For my part I say: yes, dump the Windows tablet and give me something with Android that I can love. What say you?

I personally think Windows is a great OS, but it makes absolutely no sense in a tablet. Windows was designed for the keyboard/mouse; a new hardware paradigm (touch) demands a new software paradigm (even Windows Phone 7 would’ve made more sense here.)

Good to see HP is coming to its senses but just like the numerous wishful iPhone competitors, I expect it will be a year late and still behind the curve. Apple is making an entire industry of Windows-based competitors look as redundant as AMD is to Intel.

Now that HP will have webOS, there is no point of considering Android. Especially considering the opportunity to tie the experiences together.

I disagree. Android is a great tablet OS and I’m looking forward to seeing it on more devices. webOS will no doubt be awesome as well, but there’s no need to drop Android in favor of it.

i personally was waiting for the hp slate for the sole reason of windows 7 being it it
i had some software already planned that i wanted to install

HP’s tablet computer have some drawbacks but are robust and technically successful. They are thick (by current standards), hot, too heavy and short on battery life, but my 7th grade son really likes the touch screen and pen features. I have used it as a reader around the house (but it get’s a little heavy for me and I am a big guy). I can imagine that a MS OS-based slate would be a challenge, but I agree the many applications, open file system and more open commonent/accessory options makes a low-cost, good form factor slate PC worth waiting for. Of course, intereting slate computers are available, but they are target towards low-volume business applications and cost as much as $3K per unit.

Well Hp makes it’s choice to run and hide from the market.
Tablet and Webos are droped. try to sell company computer
division to other companies. Good luck. store gave me $400
back on my tablet to keep the Hp dis-continued product.
Hope their stock goes through the basement. 50 million Hp
computers sold each year and they dump it cause their profit
margin is only 13%. Hope they like selling Ink for the next
20 years cause they will not sell a thing after this mess.
