September 28th, 2010 by Avram Piltch, LAPTOP Online Editorial Director
Today, both Roku and Tivo announced partnerships with Hulu that will bring the subscription-grade Hulu Plus service to their lines of set top boxes. Later this fall Hulu Plus, which features a variety of hit TV Shows, from Modern Family to Law and Order: SVU, will be available for $9.99 per month to those who own Roku Players or Tivo Premiere DVRs.
On Roku, the Hulu Plus service joins over 80 paid and free channels that are already available to users, including Netflix Watch Instantly, MLB TV, Amazon Video On Demand, and Pandora. Roku users are also able to view home videos and photos on their TVs by using channels like Flickr, YouTube, and Picasa.
With a starting price of just $59.99, the Roku HD Player is $40 less than the $99 AppleTV box. Roku is clearly targeting Apple, issuing this chart that touts the Player’s benefits, including and especially Hulu Plus.
