The digital movie rental plot just thickened, with media giant Warner Bros. kicking off a new plan to rent flicks through Facebook. According to the Hollywood Reporter and confirmed by Facebook, WB will offer up movies for rent through their corresponding fan pages.

The first tittle is The Dark Knight, which will cost 30 Facebook credits, or  reportedly about $3. The rental lasts 48 hours from the time of purchase and can be paused, or stopped during the rental period. More importantly, since movies are viewed through the Facebook platform, users can share thoughts and comments to friends.

In a statement to the Hollywood Reporter Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, said, “Facebook has become a daily destination for millions of people. Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts.”

That may be so but to be among the potential audience, users will have had to already have bought into the Facebook currency ecosystem through various pay-to-play games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars. In addition, those who already subscribe to digital video services such as Netflix and Amazon may not be likely to bite.
