Report: Samsung to Release 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II in October

Jul 6, 2012 02:33 PM EDT by Daniel P. Howley, LAPTOP Staff Writer

Samsung’s Galaxy Note was such a large smartphone — its display measured a palm-stretching 5.3 inches — that it effectively doubled as a mini-tablet. Never one to let such silly concepts like practicality get in their way, Samsung is reportedly working on an even larger version of the Galaxy Note, appropriately named the Galaxy Note II.

According to The Verge, by way of MK Business News, the new phone/ tablet (phablet? phoblet?) will sport a mammoth 5.5-inch display. With a screen that large, Zack Morris, the original brick phone phenom, will be green with envy. The Galaxy Note II will also reportedly come equipped with a quad-core processor, 12-megapixel rear-facing and 8-megapixel front facing cameras and run Google’s latest Android Jell Bean mobile operating system.

So when can you expect this elephantine phone/ tablet combo to hit the market? Well, MK Business News has it pegged for an October release date, just in time for Apple’s estimated iPhone 5 coming out party.

  1. Samir Shah Says:

    1) Samsung Galaxy Note II should come out in August end – September start Berlin IFA 2012 show.

    Why?

It has to do with Apple.

iPhone 5 is a do or die situation for Apple in many ways (specially after huge success of Samsung Galaxy S III) and hence Apple will pull out all the stops for iPhone 5 hype and if Samsung Galaxy Note II comes AFTER iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy Note II will be washed away in the din of iPhone 5 hype so it is better to introduce Samsung Galaxy Note II BEFORE iPhone 5.

    2) Samsung Galaxy Note II should have 5 Megapixel front facing camera.

    Why?

It is to do with asymmetry.

People expect asymmetry in download/upload Internet speeds and they expect the same asymmetry in rear facing/front facing cameras. If front facing camera is all the way up to 8 Megapixel people will feel that they are paying too much for the feature they do not need. Front facing camera can be 8 Megapixel when rear facing cameras reach 20 Megapixel and above.

    3) Samsung should not worry about 5.5″ display size. All people who buy Galaxy Note phablet are looking for a BIG screen. Samsung has phablet market all to themselves.
