OLPC and Pixel Qi Team Up To Take Over The World (With Better LCDs)
March 31st, 2010 by K. T. Bradford
Notebook and netbook manufacturers, take note: One Laptop Per Child is doing something innovative that you should be considering, too.
Today OLPC announced a cross-licensing agreement with the Pixel Qi Corporation, the company founded by former OLPCer Mary Lou Jepsen. The agreement allows the laptop maker to utilize the company’s 3qi display technology (demonstrated on the Notion Ink Adam here) to make low-power, long-lasting notebooks. Pixel Qi may end up on the next generation of XO laptops or the tablet concept Nicholas Negroponte showed off a few months ago.
As Jepsen notes in the press release, “Commercial tablets, notebook computers and smart phones have precisely the same needs.” That is displays that don’t drain power, offer the best color rendering and optimization for long reading sessions.
Looks like once again OLPC is leading the way. Should we place bets on how long it will take for other vendors to follow?
