Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Lands on AT&T August 15th for $149

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 has been available internationally for quite a while, but now it’s packing up for a stateside release and setting up shop at one of the nation’s largest carriers. The Xperia X10 is officially coming to AT&T August 15th for $149 (on 2 year contract), with Sony positioning  the device between the budget friendly HTC Aria ($129), and power-packing Samsung Captivate ($199).

The Xperia X10 is powered by a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor and 34GB of RAM, which pumps Sony Ericsson’s visually rich custom UI. It looks pretty slick, but this skin is layered over the really old Android 1.6 OS. The 4-inch WVGA 854 x 480-pixel display is generous for watching videos, surfing the Web, and browsing images snapped with its 8.1 megapixel sensor (with LED flash). Just keep in mind there’s no multitouch support, so you can’t pinch to zoom anywhere. 1GB of on board memory is installed, and total system memory can be expanded to 32GB via microSD card (a 2GB card is packed in).

Read on for more details.

The Xperia X10 offers customizable social networking and media content applications to enhance the Android experience. Mediascape aggregates both your stored and online music, photos and videos into one unified view, while Timescape organizes Facebook, Twitter, emails, and messages in a chronologically ordered scrolling menu.  An update to Android 2.1 has been announced for a Q3/Q4 release internationally (though we’d prefer Sony Ericsson would just skip to Froyo instead), but the company couldn’t nail down an ETA for the U.S.

It will be interesting to see how the X10 will be received here.  It has one of the largest screen sizes for a smart phone on the carrier, a fast processor, and a nice price point. However, it remains to be seen if it Sony Ericsson’s enhancements will overcome the dated OS.  We’ll have a full review up soon, so stay tuned.
