Nokia Lumia 1520 Rumored to Debut Next Month at Abu Dhabi Event

With a rumored phablet and alleged Windows RT tablet in the works, it was only a matter of time before Nokia planned another product launch event. True to the rumors, the Finnish manufacturer will hold a press event on Abu Dhabi on Oct. 22, where we’re likely to see some new Windows-based mobile hardware.

The invitation doesn’t reveal much about what’s to come, but the company teases on its blog that there certainly will be news coming out of the event. Nokia is expected to unveil its first Windows Phone-based phablet believed to be called the Lumia 1520. The device is rumored to be the biggest of the Lumia lineup yet, sporting a 6-inch 1080p display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, although this hasn’t been confirmed.

At the same time, reportedly leaked images and rumors surrounding a Windows RT tablet have been circulating the Web. The slate, believed to be called the Lumia 2520 and codenamed Sirius, is expected to debut with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 tablet and 2GB of RAM. The 10.1-inch slate  also may feature a 1080p display and a detachable keyboard cover similar to the Microsoft Surface, according to information obtained by The Verge in August.

Windows RT has been struggling to gain traction ever since it launched last October, but new hardware from Nokia could be exactly what the platform needs. After all, Nokia’s Lumia line have helped boost Windows Phone to the third most popular mobile ecosystem behind iOS and Android. Microsoft recently acquired Nokia’s mobile division, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see some more ambitious plans as a result of the partnership.

Microsoft is also reportedly prepping a massive Windows Phone 8.1 update that would bring support for 1080p displays as well as other additions to the platform, but this has yet to be confirmed.
