Nexus 5 Price And Image Briefly Appear in Google Play Store

Nexus 5

There’s been no shortage of speculation surrounding Google’s Nexus 5 over the past several months, but this may be the most convincing rumor yet. Some have reported seeing Google’s next-gen handset appear in the Play Store listed at $349 for the 16GB edition.

The posting appeared to be an error on Google’s part, considering the Play Store’s “Shop Devices” page now only lists the Nexus 4 alongside the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. The page, which was spotted by Engadget and The Verge,  didn’t list any details or specifications to accompany the product listing.

However, previous leaks have provided a nearly comprehensive look at the hardware we may see on the Nexus 5. The LG-crafted  stock Android handset is expected to rock a 2.3-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, just like the LG G2, and is also said to come with a 4.9-inch 1080p display. Unlike it’s predecessor, the Nexus 5 may support 4G LTE connectivity and is expected to debut with Android 4.4 KitKat.

Google appears to have taken a few design cues from its Nexus 7 with its purported Nexus 5, according to the image in the listing. There isn’t much we can gather from the rendering, but the device’s back plate looks smooth and similar to the soft-touch back on the Nexus 7, complete with its Nexus branding. There’s no sparkly rear shell on this new model like that of the Nexus 4. When looking at the image alongside a photo of the Nexus 4, we could clearly see that the 5’s display looks longer and its body appears slightly thinner. The top and bottom bezels have also been slimmed down, allowing for more screen space.

Despite these improvements, we’re pleased to see that Google is likely to keep its affordable and competitive price point. If the allegedly leaked product page proves to be accurate, the Nexus 5 will debut for the same price as the 16GB Nexus 4 when it launched nearly one year ago. Google is now selling the 16GB Nexus 4 for $100 less at $249.

At the same time, we’re expecting to see Android 4.4 KitKat debut alongside the Nexus 5 this month. The forthcoming Android update is said to bring some significant changes that may include mobile payment integration, additional camera features and enhancements, and a new printing feature among other capabilities.
