New York Times Updates Its Reader; Who Needs a Kindle?
May 11th, 2009 by Jeffrey L. Wilson
Those looking for cheaper alternatives to reading the news on a portable device instead of shelling out major cash for an Amazon Kindle 2 ($259.00) or Amazon Kindle DX, take note: The New York Times has released a new version of its New York Times Reader application for those that prefer to digest the latest headlines on their notebooks.
Built on the Adobe AIR platform (and compatible with Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows), the updated New York Times Reader has reflowing text, supports multiple columns/containers, and automatically reformats itselfs based on the amount of room on the screen. In addition, it gives you access to the New York Times‘ front page, business section, crossword, news in pictures, news in video, and other areas. The free reader is available at timesreader.nytimes.com.
With the newspaper industry in turmoil, it’s good to see papers embracing new methods of delivery. But the question remains: would you, ideally, rather read a paper in-hand, on your notebook, or on a Kindle?
