New 13-inch MacBook Air Reviewed: One of the Best Ultraportables Ever

Oct 26, 2010 01:54 PM EDT by Mark Spoonauer, LAPTOP Editor in Chief

When Apple debuted the original MacBook Air back in 2008, it redefined how slim ultraportable notebooks could be without sacrificing ergonomic comfort, but it fell short in terms of performance and battery life. Last year’s model added Nvidia graphics, but the updated Air lasted even less time on a charge. Well, the third time is the charm. The new 13-inch MacBook Air not only offers more than three times the battery life of its predecessor, it boasts even beefier graphics, instant-wake functionality (thanks to all flash storage), and a higher-resolution display. Still not impressed? How about a best-in-class glass touchpad and vastly improved speakers?

When you add all these ingredients up, the 13-inch $1,299 MacBook Air is so good that it will make many think twice before getting the 13-inch MacBook Pro ($1,199). It’s not as powerful, but the Air weighs 1.6 pounds less. Read our full review of the 13-inch MacBook Air to find out why we think it’s one of the best ultraportables ever made.
