NetTALK Duo Reviewed: It’s a MagicJack Killer

Look out, magicJack! After reviewing the netTALK Duo, we found that this voice-over IP device–which lets you make free domestic and cheap international phone calls–is not only more versatile than magicJack, but offers real, live tech support, too.

NetTALK Duo costs $69.95 for the device and one year of service; afterwards, it’s $29.95 per year. That’s $10 a year more than magicJack, but you can use the netTALK device with a traditional phone, and you can connect it directly to a router, which means you don’t have to leave your computer on to receive phone calls.

Perhaps most important–especially for all those disgruntled magicJack owners who have commented on our site–netTALK has responsive customer service.

NetTalk seems to be on their game with this new product.

  2. Nettalker Says:

The MJ is cheaper yes in the cost of the device and the yearly subscripbtion BUT with the Magic Jack you have to factor in the cost of electricity to run your computer. That averages to be at least $5.00 a month or more to operate (based on my equipment). If you factor that into the equation. The Duo is far cheaper (the duo only consumes 5 watts +/- of power vs the 90 + watts of power a computer consumes)

In addition The Duo’s platform is far more stable than the Magic Jack. WIth the Magic Jack your service is only as good as your computer. Thus, if you are multitasking if your computer is too slow. Your service suffers. On the other hand the Duo runs on it’s own processor and has its own buffer. So the voice quality is far more stable and you have no worries of interuption of service unlike Magic Jack.

With the Magic Jack you pay less on the front end but that savings is quickly eaten up by the costs of electricity. and The frustrations of choppy service if your computer can’t hack it.

In addition, Nt customer interface is far more sophisticated and easier to use than MJ’s One bonus feature I enjoy the most is NT DUO’s Caller Id. MJ CID doesn’t give the name with the Phone number But NT CID does so you know who is calling.

Also, Their Customer service is far more superior than Magic Jack, When you call NT’s Customer service or tech support you talk to a real human being. Magic Jack only provides online chat for tech support In addition, NT tech support is actually knowledgable on the product they are supporting unlike MJ where they read from scripts and have no clue on what they are talking about.

Truly you get what you pay for Mj you pay less up front but in the end you pay more. NT You do pay alittle bit more but you save alot more than money in the end. IN headaches and in cost of utilities. YOu can’t just focus on the front end costs without looking at the costs that are hidden in the back end.

I Know my comment sounds like a sales pitch. But it’s not I have both a Magic Jack and a Net talk duo and a Net tALK tK6000. My comments are based on my experiences with these devices. I got the cost of power usage by getting calculating the watts of my computer getting my kwh price .10 a kwh and calculating monthly charge. so my Magic Jack actually costs me a minimum of $60 to $100 a year in operating costs. Not cheaper huh?

One last thing. And to me this is the greatest reason to switch to the Duo, There product is ever changing and always evolving. They are always interested in new ideas. Always open to comments and suggestions. MJ doesn’t care they hve never been interested in the input of their customers. That is why they have only one model and nothing else to offer. In the years i had their service there was nothing else added major improved (only marginally) They were not responsive to the needs of their subscribers. Net Talk is different. They are proactive and responsive. well have a nice day. From a former MJ user now i’m a NeTTalker

  3. MJtoNT Says:

The Nt sounds great, especially when saving money from not leaving you computer on all the time, however, one question needs to be answered:

When you plug the Nt into your Router, it has a direct connection outbound to the Internet which is great, but what information could it be collecting on your home network and sending to the folks at NetTalk?

I haven’t seen any privacy statements at either MJ or Nt concerning these types of devices. Since MJ collects and stores your phone numbers at their sites, what else are they using the MJ to collect off of your computer and distribute.

Nt sounds great, I’m not much of a fan of MJ either, especially with a foul-mouthed CEO, but we have to task our law makers to be more strict on these type of Internet based companies – they hide behind their license agreements and privelege themselves to all of your privacy without your knowledge.

  4. John Says:

Cost prohibitive for Canadian customers wanting a canadian phone number. They want to charge an additional $5.99 a month. Magic Jack only charges $10 a year. Guess I’ll be keeping my MJ.

  5. David Williams Says:

But what you going to do when it comes time to renew? It is impossible to renew magic jack… the stupid company cannot get the automated credit card system to operate. Talk about a real modern-day rip off–MagicJack truly is a scam and a con game. Be careful… you loss your money in the end and be terribly upset.

  6. Julio Villamil Says:

Thats all for Costumer Service on MJ my niese down in South America make 3 different payments to renew Mj service, She try to contact a phone given to her supposible in US I try the number and is not longer in service.
Well looks like I give NT a try. be in touch.

  7. kriskret Says:

Comparing NTalk to MagickJack….hmmm. Net Talk is another junk

  8. roy Says:

To compare costs, magic jack plus does the same thing, but with purchasing a 99.75 five year plan (which NetTalk doesn’t offer), your net cost is just under 20 bucks a month, and can call all of Canada and the U.S., so bottom line costs are better with magic jack. my old magic jack works fine, but I will upgrade to the plus to eliminate the need to run the computer all the time. The Magic Jack plus connects directly to a router too, so there is no gain with NetTalk, only more expenses. Maybe there tech support is better, but cost is less with the M.J. plus, and does the same job

  9. paul Says:

Magic Jack Plus caller id does not give the correct month/day/or time when you use it without your computor and for that reason i found NetTalk

  10. Allen Says:

I have had magicjack for several years and have NEVER been really with the service and VERY dissatisfied with their service. I have the computer plug in type. You ABSOLUTELY cannot use the computer and the magicjack at the same time because the MJ sound will break up and make it utterly impossible to carry on a converstation. This is true for both sides of the conversation. So in order you be able to use the MJ at all, you must have a full time single purpose computer just for the MJ. Then, while still not perfect, you can use it effectively.

As for billing and help, they are absolutely the worst I have even experienced. Keep in mind, I am a computer guru and have been using computers for about 40 years. I have used the Internet for around 20 years. I am an Internet Wizard and Computer Guru and have had as much experience with “Customer Service” as anyone. MJ Customer Service is without any doubt, the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I wish I knew about NetTalk before I started with MagicJack.

Some specific problems I have experienced with MY MJ: They have billed me for items I have never ordered, never had and never wanted. Billing has no idea of how to keep anything straight. At least twice or three times a year, I end up having to deal with their billing or customer service. Like right now, I went on chat for the third tme in two months to try to straighten out if or what I owe them. After chatting for about 2.5 hours, I am still sitting in chat, waiting, waiting, waiting. I am so frustrated because I have contacted them three times for the same problem and got two different answers the first two times and am still on hold waiting to try to finally fix everything.

Each time, I have asked it certain things could be done and promised that they would be, but low and behold, NOTHING ever gets done. There is another major problem with their customer service, I strongly believe that they start a chat with one client, then tell them they are going to get the answer, but instead I really feel they go to the next customer and then the next, saying the same to each and then when they come back, they don’t even remember what we were talking about. I ask them to find out about several things, but MUCH later when they finally come back, they may have the answer to one of my questions, sometimes still not, but they NEVER have the answers to all three questions. I have never gotting everyting answered even like now when I have contected them three times in a row about the same things.

Remember, there is absolutely no way to contact them other than chat. No phone numbers, nothing. I will put the chat sessions below so you can see. I believe I am paid through Feb 2013, one of their reps have told me I am paid through Feb 2013 but when I log in, my account says, “This subscription has been deactivated.” Well it isn’t. The service is totally working. They show me with four accounts in My MJ. I don’t nor never did have anything but one jack, one account! I have pointed that out to them for YEARS. They say they will fix it, but it is still there.

Last but not least, when I got the MJ at first, the deal was buy one now and pay $19.95 per year for life. They are now saying there is a $10 per year increase!

Ok, I am getting just a little impatient with this chat session. It says I am connected but it is just short of three hours, I asked them if they were still there 30 and 15 minutes ago. I am going to start a new chat. Anyway, here are actual copies of previous chats:

  11. Allen Says:

After another hour and a half, they say I owe them $29.95 for another year. I never got to speak with a manager. And appearantly it doesn’t make any difference what anyone else has said. It also doesn’t matter that the original ads said $19.95 per year for life.

I guess you realize I still don’t recommend MagicJack.

  12. Fernando Says:

Man if I know about the poor customer service of this company I wouldnt had got 3 of them, as soon as my year is done I will switch to the other one.

  13. Matthew Says:

We are a family of 5 with cell phones so we are trying to cut the land-line costs. Magic Jack works as long as the computer is on and solely dedicated to the device. It is definitely not a device you can rely on and multi-task on one computer and expect the same service. Luckily we are also a family with multiple computers/smartphones in the house so I suppose that is MJ’s idea of fixing the problem. Our regular subscription ran out before the MJ Plus come so after two agents on MJ tech chat, NO HELP as I kept on being told the service is linked to the device and not to our phone #. IMPORTANT that you log on and unselect the ‘auto-renewal’ option. I will definitely do that so over billing can be avoided.

Anyway, it is a free trial ‘so they say’ but after reading some of the comments on billing, I am really not looking forward to dealing with them to get my money back. You do get what you pay for though. All I know is I am definitely saving from when we had to dish out min. $20 per month to our phone company. And that was the ‘bundle’ price.

We will share our experience with the MJ plus when we get it but not so sure we will venture trying the NetTalk yet. It’s good to know that there are options out there at least. Maybe MJ Plus will get humble and clean up their act soon. Too late for us but I hope our comments are helping other consumers.

  14. Dana Allen Says:

Magic Jack customer service is HORRIBLE. I don’t even consider it customer service at all. It is a total waste. I have contacted them several times (only thru chat-no live person) and these people simply do not know what’s going on. Every time they send me to their ‘top 10% agents (who don’t know any more about customer service than the first agent). I have wasted HOURS in these chats trying to get my contract renewed only to be told ‘our billing department is working on it’! I get the same versed responses so I know they are reading off scripted answers. I set up an additional year of service BEFORE my contract expired and then when I saw their rates were increasing from $69.99 per yr (5yr service) to $99.99, I also set that up only to have my service totally cut off. Now I am still waiting for that one email from Magic Jack that I have been promised over and over. I’m thinking of trying Nettalk but am somewhat leary. However, seeing that they have true and live customer reps, I’m thinging they are alot more concerned about fixing any issues so that may persuade me to give them a try. I am so frustrated with Magic Jack that I’ll never deal with that company again. THE WORST NIGHTMARE regarding customer service. STAY AWAY!!!!

  15. NetTalk Fan Says:

Just purchased and installed my NetTalk Duo. After a 5 minute, straightforward registration process, without being up-sold not ONCE, I was making and receiving calls. A functional, customizable voice mail, clear as a bell call quality are a hit. No Magic Jackass for me. The company has to do a better job of advertising, that’s a fact. As long as they don’t get a cheesy and annoying as the Magic Jackass, they will be fine.

Will test for a week before porting my ATT land line. So long DeathStar!!

  17. TechDepot Says:

Prior to owning the Net Talk Duo device and service I was Magic Jack customer for 3 years. What enticed me to switch to Net Talk Duo was the fact that their device was able to plug directly into a router and free up a computer. After getting my Net Talk Duo device configured and using the service, I noticed that the call quality was slightly better than the Magic Jack service and figured that I had made the right move, then my device stopped working! I followed all of the troubleshooting tips from the website but was still unable to resolve my issues. I then noticed that I was not getting any blinking lights from the network cable port on the Net Talk Duo device. I then went to the net talk website and opened a high priority support ticket. Two days later someone from support contacted me and wanted me to go through the troubleshooting tips on their site. I explained that I have already done all of this and will need the unit replaced. He said he would check on what can be done. A week goes by and no word, so I check the status of the case and call the tech number listed on their site. I get a live person from their “Tech” department and the gentlemen said that he is not in customer service and can’t replace my unit and gave me the direct email to the customer service side. I then write up an email including my support ticket info and explaining everything hoping this would expedite my case. Another few days go by and I get an email asking how long I have had the service. I reply with how long I have had the service, and then get a reply stating that since I have had the device longer than 30 days I cannot get a refund. This goes back and forth for about 3 weeks and I am told that I will need to buy a new device and they can transfer my number over. Initially I was going to go with that option but from the experience I had with their customer service and cheaply made device, decided not to buy another unit in hopes that it will last beyond a year. Net talk claims to have 7 day customer service but this is a farce. I am going to cut my losses and try another VOIP service. I do not recommend the Net Talk DUO, Net Talk DUO II or Net Talk in itself!

  18. Eric Says:

MAGIC JACK IS THE WORST SUPPORT SYSTEM I HAVE HER USED – USELES PAINFUL AND FRUSTRATING BEST DESCRIBES THEIR SUPPORT SERVICE – I THINK I WILL TRY NET TALK AND SEE IF IT IS ANY BETTER

    ERIC

  19. Liam Says:

Careful with Nettalk! It’s fine if your DUO works but when it gives up on you forget customer service for help. Yes, you can call cuxtomer service 7 day a week but you have to wait at least 90 MINUTES to get an agent who won’t solve the problem anyways. I bought a DUO that worked perfectly for some weeks and then died – simply a stupid orange light. I called customer service from Nettalk on a Saturday and it took 138 MINUTES (according to my cell phone display). He remotely accessed my router through teamviewer and after 30 minutes, he told me I would need the DUO replaced. Okay, that wasn’t too much trouble except I was without service for a week. Unfortunately, I had to buy a new modem and the damn and dumb Duo simply won’t work. So, I tried it on a friend’s home and it wouldn’t work either! Again, tried on another friend’s home and it won’t work. Yet this time he suggested to use it on an almost 6 year old router and it worked! Hooray, the Nettalk Duo does work, simply not with new equipment. So, if you want your Nettalk to work, get an older router/modem. The Duo worked somehow (had to powercycle at least 4 times a day and of course I missed calls) with my old Linksys BEFSR41 router and (zyxel 660 series modem) but won’t work with a newer (not brand-new anymore) TP-Link TD-W8960N ADSL modem/router. And I forgot to mention that I did call customer service again to see if an agent could bring the DUO to work with my TP-Link modem/router. The answer after 184 MINUTES: NO! Nettalk suggests to place the DUO on DMZ, open ports or change DNS settings. I did all that and I can say it’s a waste of time.

In sum, the Nettalk DUO gave me lots of headaches: simply blinked and had to powercycle many times a day, it won’t work with newer routers. And would anyone with a tiny bit of common sense call an average wait time of almost 2 hours “LIve Tech Support”?!

The DUO is simply a piece of crap similar to MagicJack (Disclaimer: I did NOT use MagicJack but heard so many similar complaints about it, that I won’t use it either).

I hope you have better luck in finding a Voip provider.

  20. Michael P Says:

Ive had Nettalk for about 2-3 months now, and still having some issues but its funny because probably 60% of the time its perfect, perfect clear phone calls, rarely a dropped call, but because of my business i call people all over the valley and even the west coast occasionally i cant get through or the number rings forever and ever. I called tech support recently and one gentlemen set it up with the proper ports but the problem Im having is because i recently bought a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router, I figured since on the packaging and in their selling points in big GIANT letters SUPPORTS VOIP i figured it was going to be straight out the box. I mean its a MUCH faster router than my old Linksys, its nice knowing i can take advantage of 37-40Mbps verses 7Mbps on the older router, and its nice to know tp link has all these nice settings but i wished their software wasnt so poorly written. Im not done using nettalk because considering its costing me 30$ a year for virtually unlimited calling, that beats 30-50$ a month for a landline business number, so 350$ a year vs 30$ a year DO NOT complain too much for an occasional dropped call. The only drawback to the nettalk device is its ONLY as good as your internet connection. And trust me, hardly anyone has a perfectly connected internet connection, sometimes theres breaks in the line, its okay, i’m sure in time things will get better, this beats a magicjack any day of the week. Atleast the phone call is clear and not garbled.

I would like to say is you better know and get ready and prepared to learn a thing or two about networking before you buy this device, if your a computer networking guru then you will enjoy this, do your research and find the perfect router for this device because I didnt, i just bought the cheapest thing with the most features that just so happens to have the word “VOIP” in the details and i figured thats good enough.

Nettalks customer service has been wonderful, I even got a gentlemen’s personal email address so if i had further problems i would email him and hes been very helpful and calling back trying to make sure everything is alright.

When i do connect through, the calls are perfect and i can be on the line for hours, just sometimes on certain numbers, some landlines or even cell phones it wont connect, so ill dial a 1 before the area code then it will connect then other numbers it doesnt like the 1. But for 30$ (or in my case less then that) dont complain too much, just be patient, just know your internet connection plays a part, sure it can download something at 3-5 megabytes a second but it might a few times a day cut out for a split second, and thats just enough to kill your nettalks connection.

Alam, I’m laughing as I read your chats..I have had very very similar chats with Magic Jack and determined, it’s totally noy worth it, regardless odf the savcings. There are better deals out there. 1 1/2 years ago I bought the Ooma Syaten, needs only a high speed routher, includes it’s own router…bought at Costco for 149.00 and got a %50 rebate. I pay $4.10 per month (which is taxes) GET crystal clean talk and recetion and 50 minuter intermaional per month, the fax works perfect and support in excellent, and no chat, phone to phone support…the very best checck it out,
    Eddie

I’ve had the Magic Jack Plus for a few months now and I’ve not been too impressed by it. The hardware works fine, even have it connected to my home’s internal phone line so I can use any phone in the house. Doing that, you have to disconnect your home’s internal lines at the phone box outside to avoid back feed to the outside phone lines.
My issue is the long distance. Occasionally one of us will call a friend or relative long distance and talk for a couple of hours. Problem is: after 90 minutes we get cut off and lose outgoing service for an hour or so(get a message saying “all circuits are busy”). Can still receive calls though, but for a limited amount of time(5-10 minutes). It’s NOT the device, it’s the so-called service.
Another thing that’s cropped up shortly after activation was MJ won’t let me call certain areas without purchasing “air-time.” These numbers ARE within the 48 states…one number is one state away(140 miles), and another number is only 10 miles away. The airtime is expensive, so I just use my cell for these numbers. Pi$$e$ me off ’cause I bought MJ ’cause of the advertised “free” long distance, among other things.
    Buyer beware.

I just noticed while renewing NetTalk, the actual renewal fee is 29.95 but there is a hidden cost to it of about 10 dollars. And I ended up paying 39.94 that’s right!! 10 dollars in this fee that fee…hidden fee.

    Not happy……about it :(
