Netbook Madness Game 6: Samsung NC20 vs. Asus EeePC S101

March 25th, 2009 by Michael A. Prospero, LAPTOP Reviews Editor

brackets_rd6 First, the results of yesterday’s game: The Lenovo IdeaPad S10E bested the HP Mini 1000, taking about 60 percent of the votes. By beating the Mini 1000, the S10E also knocked HP completely out of the tournament.Which company is the Big East of our tourney, and which one is the ACC? On to today’s game: the Samsung NC20 vs. the ASUS EeePC S101. Like the Dell Inspiron Mini 12, the NC20 is one of the largest netbooks out there, and in terms of size, really blurs the line between netbooks and low-cost ultraportables. It features a 12-inch (1280 x 800) screen, and a nice large keyboard, but weighs 3.4 pounds. By comparison, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 weighs 3.8 pounds, and that’s with a 9-cell battery. At $478, the NC20 is more expensive than most netbooks, but cheaper than the EeePC S101, ASUS’ screw-the-recession luxury mini-notebook. Originally priced at $699, it can now be had for $100 or so less from online retailers. With that higher price, though, you’re getting one of the lightest (2.4 pounds) and thinnest (0.7 inches) netbooks on the market. While the S101 has the same Atom processor as the 1000H, it features a 16GB SSD (and 30GB of free online storage), chrome trim, a beautiful bronze lid, and Swarovski crystals in the hinge. This netbook is taking its own private plane to the big dance. So which would you prefer? The NC20, which weighs a pound more thanĀ  the S101, but has a larger keyboard and screen, or the EeePC S101, which has good performance and a whole lotta style, too? Voting is now closed. The ASUS EeePC S101 wins this round. game-6-poll

Got my vote in ;) !

  2. Jdtx Says:

NC20 is a nice netbook, it could be better but it runs a slow via proccessor as oppose to the faster atom on the asus.

  3. ChrisC Says:

NC20 is clearly the better unit. At 480$~, the S101 was 650$ when I was researching it, had something like 12GB SSD, very very difficult to upgrade RAM, bad right shift key and low battery life. So I’m surprised anyone would have purchased a netbook for 650$. But on the bright side, it has a 10″ screen which is the common for netbooks seeing as this is a netbook faceoff.

  4. The Man Behind The Mask Says:

I just got the NC20, I must say that is it one fast machine. You can over clock the CPU to 1.6 and the screen and keyboard are perfect!! Its a must have!!!

  5. caliterp Says:

The NC20 is far superior, the VIA processor is something different in a category that runs a little too vanilla on the Atom. Plus you get a 12″ screen, 160GB HDD which is easily upgradable and a bigger keyboard making it more usable. All this for around $500, it’s a no brainer. Go Sammy!

  6. UK Craze Says:

The NC20 Rocks!!! Samsung is the best, I love my NC20 and would not trade it in for anything else. I can do everything from the Samsung NC20.

S101 to NC20 is like comparing supermodel to a farm worker. Be real people

  8. EeeeeHa! Says:

I say Samsung NC20 is cheaper and pack more feature than EeePC S101. But went I think of all the past excellent services I am getting from my old Asus laptop. I can justify paying more for my EeePC S101. Because I know I will be taken care off in the long run.

    i like asus

  10. Yaha Says:

I think ASUS S101 is the best netbook because of her fashion design~~

  11. Sophialily Says:

ASUS is the leader of Netbook. I believe he has fully confidence in his products. S101 has all the fantastic features he designs. And by the way, 10” screen is more than a netbook, but just suitable for a netbook.

  12. tim Says:

Its about a screen resolution that you can actually use for a longer period of time. With 1280×800 the Samsung NC20 is absolutely the hands down winner.

  13. Netbook fan Says:

The Asus S101 is designed to be a luxury netbook, focusing mainly on aesthetics that makes it an eye-candy for anyone. On a functionality/practicality standpoint, the Samsung NC20 would be the clear winner, but at the same time, the NC20 lacks the sexiness and elegance the S101 has to offer. Sleekness is a rare attribute in netbooks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the S101 came out as the winner in this round due to that very reason.

  14. SammyFan Says:

Wow It is amazing how many people have voted. I am a Samsung NC10 fan and cant wait for the NC20 to get into the US market. Samsung has my vote!

  15. ASUS fan Says:

i hate samsung notebook , it is very bad, i use the NC10 to play WOW , made me Collapse

  16. Solinx Says:

Well, I don’t think it’s amazing how many voted, I rather doubt so many voted. Previous matches nowhere near got this many votes and just about a short hour ago, the count was 2800 for Asus and about 7-800 for MSI. Right now I’m looking at 28 000 for Asus and 14 000 for MSI.
The three previous matches nowhere near got that much votes. They didn’t even get half as much votes as it was an hour ago.

btw. While I’m from msiwind.net, I don’t consider the U100 as having a good chance to win in this netbook madness game. The Wind U100 just isn’t top of the game anymore compared to other offers that have been brought to the market since.

  17. Solinx Says:

Damn. I need my morning coffee. Sorry guys, I clicked the wrong link and only quickly checked the number. This does put the now ongoing match (10) between the MSI and Asus in a new perspective. Guess I was wrong about this, the numbers there could well be real.

  18. Jez - Samsung netbook Community Says:

    we woz robbed

  19. Aymeric Says:

NC20 is a great netbook for email & internet and that is its primary function. Chrome is the perfect engine to run with and i am waiting for the new OS from Google.
