Navigon Calls it Quits on US PND Market
May 4th, 2009 by Todd Haselton
Navigon today announced that it is leaving the North American personal navigation device (PND) market, due to economic stress. The good news is, if you are a current Navigon owner, CEO Egon Minar told GPSBusinessNews.com that Navigon “will continue to fulfill all obligations to our existing PND customers in terms of map update[s], etc.” Hopefully that means support and “Lifetime traffic,” are still included in those obligations. The company is hoping to pump up its mobile business, though. It recently signed on with T-Mobile Germany for built-in navigation on its line of smart phones. T-Mobile in the United States uses a Telenav solution on its devices. [via GPSBusinessNews]

I am in the market for a Navigon. Now that they’ve announced pulling out of the US PND market, is it wise to buy one anymore? I am particularly referring to the “live traffic” updates and the map updates. They said that are still going to continue support, but I fear that since they aren’t directly in the market that they won’t be motivated to provide competitive services. Thoughts?
