MSI Wind To Be Sold at Best Buy

October 6th, 2008 by Joanna Stern

Last Friday we had the pleasure of  talking to MSI’s Director of U.S. Sales Andy Tung. Tung hinted at the time that they were about to bring the popular MSI Wind U100 to a big box retailer. Today the company announced that they will be selling the 10-inch netbook at Best Buy starting this month.

The Wind sporting a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor, Windows XP, a 120GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM and a 3-cell battery will be available for $399 at Best Buy in the coming weeks.

Best Buy, has been hesitant to join the netbook game (they have only offered early versions of the ASUS Eee PC), but will feature the Wind in brick and mortar stores as well on its Web site. “Best Buy’s assortment in this category will expand. We are trying to be very clear with our customers with what a netbook can and can’t do. Netbooks can be outstanding products, but if you are purchasing it to replace a notebook you can be very fustrated very quickly,” Best Buy’s Jason Bonfig said.

MSI’s Tung told us last week that the return rate of Linux netbooks have been four times as high as those that run Windows XP. When asked about return and exchange rate of Linux netbooks Bonfig said it was too early to tell, but said you will find “one linux version and two XP versions in our three skew assortment going forward.”

This is great and all but what DAY is it going to come out? Anyone even have a remote clue as to the date?

Staples in Canada has been selling these since July, 2008!
