MSI Officially Announces CES Line Up, Super Slim MSI X-Slim 320 Included

January 5th, 2009 by Joanna Stern

090105_1Last month MSI’s Andy Tung gave us a nice preview from of what MSI was planning to show off this coming week at CES. Included was the promises of the Wind U120, U115 and a promised “shocking” 13-inch slim notebook. Today, MSI is confirming and promising to deliver all at tomorrow’s CES Unveiled in Las Vegas. We will be blogging our impressions of the system right after so stay tuned for video and sexy pictures.

According to the press release issued by MSI U.S., the company will be showcasing the company’s entire U line, including the Wind U115 and U120 for the first time.  As we have detailed before, the U115 promises to be quite different from the crop of netbooks we have seen with its simultaneously running SSD and hard drive.  Employing what the company calls hybrid storage technology, the U115 can provide 12-hour battery when operating in Eco mode with its 6-cell battery. Sounds promising, but we will believe it when we see it.

Less exciting is the Wind U120 (which I am actually typing on right now) which will sport the same specs as the original Wind but  has a different chassis and will feature  WiMAX Technology or a 3.5G Solution. Check out our exclusive hands-on here.

Left out of the U.S. release but found in MSI’s global release is information on the  X-Slim Series X320 (we assume this is the same system U300 Tung told us about).  The details on the specs are fairly “slim”, especially the line about the processor which says “the MSI X320 is equipped with the latest Intel platform.” Is that an Atom processor? We expect to find out tomorrow.

Other than that we know it sports a 13.4- inch 16:9 aspect ratio display and boasts to be as skinny as a runway model (pictured above). It apparently the thinnest part is only .2 inches thick. In addition it will feature a 4 cell or 8 cell battery claiming to last up to 10 hours. It is said to come in Champagne gold, pearl white or black.

For gamers, MSI will be showing the newest additions to its G-Series  line, including the GT725, GT727, GT627 and GX420. The release claims that the GT725 and GT727 can break the 10,000 points on 3Dmark.   If that isn’t enough, rivaling Voodoo’s gaming concept notebook, the company will display an eco-friendly Carbon-Fiber Concept Gaming Notebook.

Stay tuned we plan on spending a good amount of time with MSI at tomorrow night’s opening exhibition. And don’t forget we were promised some Wind touch screen goodness as well…

The track-pad is unresponsive quite often for several seconds and lags and skips on occasion, but this isn’t a real killer, especially if you have even the smallest semblance of patience.

    Bottom Line:

    Pros:

    -less that 2 pounds.
    -beautiful screen, excellent colors.
    -keyboard is great.
-has Memory Sync, works well with external hard-drives.
-long battery life, not 9 hours unless on power-saver mode. more like 6.5 – 7.
-some good software comes pre-loaded on it.
    -keyboard shortcuts are well positioned.
    -full sized keyboard.
-track-pad is twice as big as other net-books.
-absolutely perfect for online activities. *Word of warning, if you are the kind of person that saves hundreds of pictures and music files, buy a USB flash drive or an external hard-drive and store them on there, I advise people to do this with all their computers (net-books or otherwise) because it keeps their machines running fast.
