This face-off was actually closer that we thought it was going to be. The iPad 2 won eight rounds outright, the Xoom took five, and the two tablets tied in one round (video chat). The iPad excelled in the design, display, and performance categories, as well as in multimedia. But where it really pulls ahead is apps. It will take quite a while for the Android camp to catch up.
The areas where the Xoom pulled ahead — software, interface, e-mail, browsing — have mostly to do with Android 3.0. In addition, only the Xoom offers Flash support. We like that the Xoom has a better camera on the back, but its somewhat sluggish performance, relatively muddy display, and heavier weight held it back.
Overall, the Xoom is a solid first effort for the first Android 3.0 tablet, but the iPad 2 is the undisputed winner of this face-off. Here’s hoping the Xoom 2 is better.
